Of course, most of the time you can show up and politely inquire "may I see a room please?"
... except for peak periods, where they're fully booked up, the reputable ones will be delighted to show you ...
and those that want your money before showing their wares? well ... you can let your imagination answer the question why!
As with everything, there's a high end and a low end ...
the low end have no windows, are dirty, humid, and smell a bit stale ...
but the good ones are well-maintained, have everything you need: bed(s), ensuite toilet and bath, aircon, direct-dial telephone, TV, clean boiled drinking water, windows, curtains, and may even have storage for your clothes (we're talking budget travelling here!!).
Once upon a time Lonely Planet had a good list, but I'm sure things have moved on in the internet age ... seek and ye shall find ...
