Last Sept it was 7.78 at TST.
Actually these money changers post their rate lower but try to haggle with them to increase the exchange rate a bit higher.
Some times they give in if they know you'll be exchanging a huge amount of US$ with them.

no. they never charge ATM fees, but the ATM where you withdraw might have fees.

sorry i meant if you open a bank acct with them and you withdraw foreign currency do you get whacked with a FX fee on top of the ATM fee?  With the citibank acct if I use a citi ATM there is no FX fees and you get the market rate for the cash you withdraw.

citibank is notorious for using a big spread on its FX conversions. so while there is no ATM fee, they don't necessarily give you the best exchange rate.

in HK, the best rate you can get from an international bank is from HSBC. It doesn't matter from which currency account (USD, CAD, AUD) I withdraw HKD from, the rate is always very close to the spot rate you see on Bloomberg. I believe HSBC imposes a limit of HKD 6,500 withdrawal per day if you're withdrawing from an international HSBC account.

Is there such a thing as international HSBC account? I thought HSBC  accounts in each country are distinct and can't be withdrawn funds in HK if you have an account in England, for example. You can transfer but not withdrawn directly.

No FX fee and you get a pretty good FX Rate too.

i believe you need to be a citibank gold member to get the FX fee waved.

Ya...you need the citibank gold but its worth it since they didn't charge me fees when I withdraw HKD from the citi atm.  And the rate they gave me was 7.7HKD to 1 USD

This is probably the best currency exchange in Hong Kong. Rates are better than banks.

Word of advice. Call them in advance and check the rate 2523-3403. You can make an appointment as well if you tell them your phonenumber and how much you are going to change. Some hours the place is packed and you will have to stand in a line forever if you had not made an appointment. Once you have a time slot just walk past the line straight to the window to the far right. Will save you some time!

Good advice, the best place for exchange is inside the ChungKing mansion, there are quite a few stalls there and their rates are very competitive. If you are in central, you can go to

Berlin Company ...

General rules:
1. Never change in your own country unless you need a minimum taxi money
2. Never change at airport.  rates are not good
3. Never change at you hotel.  Rates are even worse than airport ...

Thanks for the advise. I know about number 2. But number 3 is interesting. Should really put number 1 to use. Tend to just exchange the amount I think I might need and use everything else on card. Anybody able to confirm that the credit card company exchange rates are better?

If you cannot get over to Kowloon and your bank does not have a branch in HK, you can always go to the cluster of local and international forex places that are around the Wanchai MTR station, exit A1, (under the pedestrian bridge) between
Lockhart Road and Hennessy Road.

There must be at least 8 places you can go, no more than 1 minute walking from each other. The local ones (the ones with red shop signs) have great rates (1usd=7.75hkd or better) but will likely close by 6pm. Because of these local places, the international, Western Union / Travelex, etc will also have rates that are close or the same as the local ones. But once those local ones close at 6-630pm, the international ones, Western Union/Travelex, will charge a significantly higher rate, but at least they will be open to the wee hours.
