The question is not whether to be concerned or not, you should be concerned. Always listen to that little voice of caution.
But that doesn't mean you run away.
Life is a dangerous place. But if you try to avoid all the dangers, it'll just crush you anyway, and you'll live a life of regrets and missed opportunities, all while watching others having fun. Doesn't matter if you're learning to fly a jetpack, skydiving, learning to swim, or just to cross the road. Key is to be fully aware of the risks, and come up with a strategy to mitigate them that does NOT mitigate the payoff. HOW you do that is up to you and your personality.
BIG difference between walking down a dark alley in Shenzhen, and walking into the lobby of a proper hotel (that happens to have a few improper guests), or ringing the door of a walkup girl.
Identify the risks, then mitigate them.
... oh, and if you think punting is dangerous, try punting after you're already married ...
