Apple controls its own market there are no deals on them other than refurbished models or sales from the websites. There is a large second hand market for Apple products but even then resale value generally holds really well.

One of those things where they keep the brand protected by not offering sales.   During the recession the risk to the high end clothes and luxury market was to hold price.once price is broken then it's hard to go back.  So apple will not break price even on big sale days like cyber Monday.  Until there is real competition such as between hp and Dell price is going to stick.

you guys heard of Sandy Bridge? New chip from intel coming out in January - should offer substantially better graphics processing for Macs. If you're thinking about buying now I would consider waiting 2-3 months.

I think macbooks and apple comps are great for the urban hipster. . . cause it's sleek and all.
but in terms of value, you can find lots of laptops for half the price . . . . with about the same specs!

i would never get an ipad though... it's just an OVER SIZED IPOD TOUCH. but if i had the money and wanted something other than vista/windows then i'd go for a macbook pro!

Imho, unless you want it because it's an apple, then it seriously is not worth it.

With that kind of money, you can easily get a sony vaio with more capability probably half of it's price..

right now there's a bunch of sales for the macbook air!

I spoke to my server guy and he says running parallel OS on the MAC on a PC server you don't experience the resource issues like a PC.

but i agree with harrysally12345, a sony vaio is much more capable at the end of the day

Saw few of them on vacation.  Most people had iPad.  Those without had regular laptops. Seems like people who can afford new machine or secondary one  will go with iPad.  theres going to need to be some benefit of the air that just does not seem there.

I have both the ipad and the macbook air.  I find the need for a full computer when doing alot of work related stuff.  But for just emailing and surfing, the ipad is more than sufficient.  So depending on what I need when I go out of town, I take either or even take both cuz they are both super light and mobile.  I still find the need to have flash when surfing therefore, if someone if trying to decide between either, I would opt for the Air.  As both are just as portable.

Are you referring to the 11 or 13 inch Air? I would have a preference for the 13 inch because of the bigger HD but then it costs more than the 13 inch MacBook Pro. The thing that bugs me about the 11 inch is the shorter battery life and smaller HD and also no SD card slot.

As for the iPad, I think it's really a great toy but no substitute for a computer. It can't do any real computing as you can't work on Excel and Word. The equivalents Numbers and Pages software are a joke.

I have the 13".  Yes it is a bit more money than the 11" but I think if you are going to do any word or excel work on it, the 11" is just a bit too small.  I think its on the small side for surfing the web.  If you are going to stream video or watch a lot of video's, then I think the 13" is better suited for you.  It has a faster processor and like you said, bigger HD.  Even at 13", because its so light and slim, it is very portable.  But if you are buying, i would buy directly from Apple's website cuz you can upgrade the RAM to 4GB from 2GB.  they solder the RAM onto the motherboard so you can't upgrade it down the road.  So better to get 4GB right off the bat.

let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the tip. You got me so fired up I think I shall go and get the 13" today. I would rather get it from my regular reseller as he loads in a lot of free software (MS Office, Adobe FOC) for me. This would be my 6th Mac notebook. One question. The Air is very speedy because of the flash drive but what if I were to use it always with an external HD attached for the data? Wouldn't that slow things down considerably? Also, I have owned many 15 inch MacBook Pros in the past and for this reason always stuck to the same 15" because the power adapter would not be compatible with the Air or the 13" MacBook Pro model. If I were to use my 15" MacBook Pro power adapter with the 13" Air, would this damage the computer? I don't want to spend extra $$ by buying lots of other ex tra power adaptors for the 13"

So, anyone know whether an external HD will slow down the performance of the new Airbook Air? I was in HK yesterday and was unable to get a straight answer from the salesmen in several Causeway Bay shops. I even preempted my purchase by first getting this very sleek looking Louis Vuitton case for the MacBook Air which cost as much as the Air. Very impulsive purchase I guess but these days LV will willingly exchange the item for another item if you have second thoughts.

An external HD should not slow down the performance of operations. All the operating files and programs are stored on the solid state internal HD, which is where most of the action takes place. As long as you don't install programs in the external HD and keep it to just a storage drive, performance will not be affected.

Thanks for that info. What you're saying is that I can install my photo and music library on the external HD and everything will just operate as fast as if the data files were on the internal HD itself. Would this include Photoshop? If I were working on a picture located on the external HD itself?

The only different in performance is accessing and writing the file on the external HD. If you're working on a photo in PS, it'll feel just as fast as if the file was on internal HD. This is because PS only needs access to the file when you opened it and when you decide to save it, so very minimal access frequency on the external HD.

When you buy your external HD, get 7200 RPM or better, don't go for 5400 RPM.

The iPad or the iPad2 will never be a substitute for a MacBook Air. I need to write documents and use Excel. I already have the iPad and it's fun and functional but by no means a work horse. Unfortunately the fully loaded MacBook Air isn't cheap at US$1,800.
