as you can see i am not too familiar with the ease of getting a visa to HK. I thought it was easy since they opened the flood gates but who am I to know.

if its the cost of visa then I would suggest paying for it rather than having you looking over your back every so often when you are in china and if she is willing to come down its a good sign

Best solution is to get a hotel room close to where she lives and have her spend time with you in the Hotel. Its much easier, secure and will give you piece of mind. If you are staying at the girls place you never know who might come in. Worth the money for security nice shower and clean bed

There is still enforce a one country two system for the remainder of 37 years.  For PRC citizens, getting a VISA for HK an Macau isn't easy. For the girl, if she is not originally born or is a permanent resident of Guangdong province she would have to go back to her home province and apply for a visa to HK or Macau. Application can take up to 2 weeks. It's not as easy as it looks and best to just visit her in China.

Agree with the musketeer.

If you're used to 5 star comfort you might be disappointed. But her place will surely be 'livable'.

Have shacked up with WG's in Thailand and Indonesia and had a great time. Great insight into local life.

Just use common sense and remember where you are... and of course don't bring anything you'd mind losing.

Definitely go to her place, just have a back up plan.

I have gone to a former WG apartment in DG a couple of times for home cooked meal, meet her friends, and hang out.  It was a great learning experience and the food was really good (but I'm adventurous).  It's amazing how livable they can make a very small one room apartment (kitchen and bathroom were out on the patio).  But I never stayed the night, and the neighborhood in general was scary.

Here are a couple of pictures.  It doesn't look like much but it was very pleasant.  In the first picture I was standing in one corner of the room, so you are basically seeing half of it.  We were getting dinner ready.  The second picture is the kitchen which is actually outside.

Yeah, I've seen it all over the place.  But this is actually her sister's apartment and I know for sure there is no business going on here.  These big posters are also used to cover up problems with the walls.
