Well there is mention that RIM is going to launch a new OS for their smartphones pretty soon, perhaps to freshen up their image as a hip phone as well as oppose to being just a business device. ...

The new OS6 for Blackberry will be released within a week but unfortunately it will not work with the existing Blackberry models as it needs a minimum of 512k of ram. This new OS will only work with the Blackberry 9800, yet to be released (mid Aug). The new OS system and the new 9800 is supposed to be revolutionary but we shall know how good this new device is in a couple of weeks. The new OS will boost sales for RIM as this is a major upgrade, unlike the iPhone 4 which is only a slight improvement over the 3Gs.

Read a report about the torch but must say it totally lacked any detail.  Sounds like you are right that until it comes out won't know how good it is.

Some iPhone4 Rumour updates:

3. New iPhone. According to our source—and we have to say that we find this part hard to believe—Apple is pushing up the release date of the fifth-generation iPhone to early 2011 (as soon as January) because of the antenna issues with the iPhone 4. It’s unknown whether this will be a repackaging of iPhone 4 components in a different shell or something more substantial. We reiterate: it’s hard to believe. But as with so many seemingly far-fetched early reports, it’s not impossible.

might be good to wait and see till october, when the next press conference is?

i saw the 4G in a store this week and really loved it. compared to my 3G it seems to be MUCH faster. that would be the main reason for me to upgrade. my 3G is lagging from time to time while the 4G seems to be running really smooth. I'll probably buy one as soon as the price drops a bit..

Ive got a iphone 3gs and wouldnt upgrade to iphone 4 as I dont think there is a speed improvement, the 4 is also slightly heavier than 3gs.
Also the 4 uses a new smaller SIM card which I think is a hassle if you use multiple SIM's in multiple phones.
There is also a high chance of you breaking the glass on BOTH sides of the 4 if you drop it.
After updating my 3gs to OS4 I get most of the functions of the 4 like multitasking and folders.
So dont see the point if you already got a 3gs, but anything else then yes or maybe get the 3gs.

China Unicom to finally roll out iPhone with WiFi
August 6, 2010 - 4:35PM

China Unicom, the only telecom operator offering Apple's iPhone in the world's largest mobile market, said Friday that it would start selling the smartphone with WiFi function next week.
The iPhone only officially went on sale in China in October -- more than two years after its US debut -- and was offered in a stripped down version without WiFi.
But from Monday, Unicom will offer customers an eight-gigabyte version of the iPhone 3GS model with wireless Internet capability, Unicom said in a statement on its website.

"It will be offered in only a few provinces at first" as wider distribution will take time, a company official, who declined to be named, told AFP.
Analysts say the government had opposed phones equipped with the feature out of fear that state-owned telecoms firms would lose revenue due to the large number of free wireless hotspots in the country.
The iPhone with WiFi capability only got a network access licence in China in July.
The WiFi-equipped iPhone will sell for 4,999 yuan (738 US dollars) -- the same price as the model without Wi-Fi, according to the statement.
But customers may get a handset free of charge if they subscribe to a monthly package of at least 226 yuan.
China has had a thriving grey market in Apple products for years, helping plug demand for the company's products, including the iPhone.
Unicom has said it expects to offer iPhone 4 in China later this year and is in talks with Apple to sell the iPad tablet computer.
China had the world's largest number of mobile phone users at about 805 million at the end of June, official data showed.

Is this the reason why you can sell your old iPhone on eBay for big bucks. The demand for an old product is amazing.

Especially in China with the jacked up prices, there was a recent article about people trying to smuggle iphone's from HK over to China because of the huge price difference.... The market for second hand iphones there is large.

Just saw that the main pointperson at apple who had responsibility for the iphone4 resigned.  The guy was from IBM. Turns out even with the reception issue the iPhone 4 is a huge percentage of apples sales. The guy is still gone. Tough out there huh.

Apple iPhone 4 sales strong in China
September 29, 2010 - 3:35PM

More than 200,000 Apple iPhone 4s have been snapped up in China within days of going on sale while waiting lists stretch to the end of October, state media reported Wednesday.
About 100,000 units were sold in the first four days and another 100,000 are on back order in the world's largest mobile market, the China Daily newspaper reported, citing Apple's mobile operator partner China Unicom.
"The sales of previous versions of iPhones created a solid foundation for the iPhone 4," China Unicom senior vice-president Li Gang was quoted as saying.
The 16-gigabyte version of the smartphone, which has wireless Internet capability, costs 4,999 yuan (744 US dollars) with the 32-gigabyte selling for 5,999 yuan, Apple has said.
The phone -- which made its world debut in June -- is being sold at Apple stores in Beijing and Shanghai, China Unicom outlets and other consumer electronics stores.
Unicom, the country's second-largest mobile phone operator, reportedly took nearly 50,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4 on September 17, the opening day for reservations.
The phone debuted in China on September 25, just a week after Apple officially launched the iPad in the country, with some customers queuing up for several days to ensure they got their hands on the tablet computer.
Both products have been available for several months on China's grey market, which has been booming thanks to great demand for Apple goods.
The earlier version of the iPhone only officially went on sale in China in October -- more than two years after its US launch.
China has at least 420 million web users and is also the world's largest mobile market with more than 800 million subscribers as of the end of June, according to official data.

I have actually checked out the 3G data plan that China Unicom has for the old and new iPhones and it is very, very expensive. Not really worth surfing the net with what China Unicom is offering. Better to get a China Mobile sim card and use 2.5G and use a kit to cut that sim card up into a micro sim card which the iPhone uses.

Best deal is China Telecom. Cheapest 3G internet and roaming even when compared to Hong Kong but then China Telecom uses the CDMA system which unfortunately is not compatible with the iPhone.

BTW, Congrats Atomic, you've made it to EE!

You are mistaken. The Blackberry works perfectly well on the mainland, even in the far Northeast on the northern border of North Korea. Where did you come up with such a notion?

i agree with Geoduck. Blackberry is one of the most stable and long lasting device as many companies use it and even apply self-application on it.

You can say it's not "beautiful", but that's why companies buy blackberry for its colleagues... Imagine if you are the boss and buy iphone4 for your workers.... probably they will just play with iphone4 and not working

I have been looking at buying the iphone 4 too. But its stupidly expensive.. you can get a decent laptop or a washing machine and fridge for that money!

Anyway, I'm a bit confused as I have seen that the local fortress has in stock iphone4 32G for $5888. Ready to go but they have to unbridge it. I am not sure what that is, but the fortress guy said its to register it.

Anyway, I went to MK Sin Dat building (the one where the whole building is selling mobiles) and the trade in price for iphone4's 32g was $6200! So whats the deal here? Am I hearing wrong or can you make a bit of money buying from fortress and selling it at Sin Dat. Can anyone elighten me here?
