I know for a fact that all these big electronic shops started giving discounts 2 years ago ...
the only time they don't give them is for items they've already discounted or their display items.

Before you guys go shopping in the summer heat to compare prices, have check on this site - http://www.price.com.hk/ - where people post the latest prices and offers on electronics available in HK. Its in Chinese only but Google Chrome or Google translator will help to translate the Chinese text into English, not really rocket science

Need a camera for your conquests?  Unless you
can somehow change a few things, there is a duty for
goods entering the United States.   If you carry it
in your luggage without any packaging chances
is very good nobody will ask any questions or charge duty
for it.

I think on the whole cameras in Hong Kong are cheaper than
in the US.

It's 800 USD exemption for US customs. Most people usually put a lesser amount on the customs declaration forum. The exemption was less around 300 - 400 USD before.  When it was less, I had to get fake receipts.

Some of the cameras I am looking out for this year are Canon G12, Canon Pro2, Olympus EPL-2, Panasonic GF2, and Panasonic LX 5.  These cameras are all rumors to be out sometime in August, just before Photokina 2010.

I would like to know if it is cheaper to buy a camera in Hong Kong than mail order in the USA. I live in the USA...

Having tried this before I have to say, just get your camera in the US. The price is about the same, and you're already there, so it should be easier for you.

The question that you didn't ask, and one that I'm surprised nobody else has asked you yet is,  "Which camera do you want to get?"

If your camera is going to be a punting accessory then it should have the following features:
  1. really good low light performance -- hotel rooms are dark places!
  2. very good image stabilization -- it's hard to hold a camera steady when your taking action shots of a HG riding you!
  3. actual buttons -- touch screen cameras are too fussy and just don't work well when you're trying to operate them one handed.
  4. good low light movie mode -- you never know when you'll get lucky!

I suggest the new(ish) Sony DSC-HX5V. It's by far the best one that I've used for our "hobby".

At least for the next few weeks, your best bet it to use a vendor you find through shopping.bing.com. They're offering extra cashback until the end of July.

Here's a link to find vendors for the DSC-HX5V (http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q=hx5v)

Maybe once you get a good camera you'll be able to add a few of your own shots to the BBB thread!

Good luck, and happy shopping!

Sorry Atomic,

I haven't been in HKG in over a year, just got the camera last month. The shots I have that I could show are all personal. I promise that I'll post a torrent of photos using it next time I'm in town!

I quick web search turned up some sample galleries, but this link to flikr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/minami/tags/hx5v/) has a huge number of shot using the camera. The first page shows some dark room auditorium shots that show how good the camera is in low light...

I have not looked at any Sony Cameras yet, thks....

Some of the cameras I am looking at are not out yet. I listed them in a post 26. I guess you missed it.

Canon G12, Canon Pro2, Olympus EPL-2, Panasonic GF2, and Panasonic LX 5.  These cameras are all rumors to be announced in August, just before Photokina Photo Show 2010.

I agree with you, if the price is about the same, I would get it in the USA. There will be less trouble if something goes wrong. On other hand,  I will be in HK when these new cameras are on the shelves in Sept and I want something to take decent pictures.  I almost picked up the Canon G11 and LX 3 last year but the video on both are not that great. The size and pictures are great for both of these small camera. I will wait and see what are my options.

The best link kordoroff suggested is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/. BH is actually a store in Manhattan run by a Jewish consortium with huge inventories. Their pricing, even for the latest models, are usually cheaper than in HK.  For older models, they want to clear inventory quickly so the pricing is even more aggressive.

Even Future Shop in Canada has better pricing than many HK stores, especially for DSLRs.

Which is a pretty sad statement in of itself, as FS doesn't have the best pricing in Canada. But there this little tax in Canada which makes quite the difference, and may make HK cameras cheaper, but probably not worth the hassle. Better to do online ordering from a place in U.S. that you reputable.

I found this old thread in the Q and A section on getting a camera.

http://forum.sex141.com/eforum/v ... ;highlight=%2BWa%2B

----------------------------------------------

It seem like it if the price is almost the same, it's better to buy in the USA than in HK.  Thanks for all the replies.

Requirements:
1. Small pocket camera or small 4/3
2. 1080p HD video
3. price around 600-700 USD
4. Must have good low light, wide about 24 to ~105mm.
5. Large senor and fast lens

Have owned the GF1 now for 7 months and never been happier. Goose also uses the GF1 for his pictures in the forum. However, I just returned from a trip and a friend brought along the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV with a 100m f2.8 macro lens. Have never seen any camera take pictures as perfectly as the EOS-1D. Truly incredible camera and it handles well. Now, I want one for myself but when I found out how much it cost, it gave me a shock. Also, wonder how I can lug around such a monster along on a trip. Very tempted to take the plunge on this one. Have you heard of this camera and what do you think?

Have you considered the Canon 5D Mark II? Its probably half the price, but with full frame and with most the stuff you'd get on the 1D Mark IV.

Wow, that monster is over 4300 USD body only. It retails for 4999 USD.  It's big and heavy too.

Years ago, I had a big SLR, 35mm film. It was too big and heavy to carry around. Then Carrying around two lens wasn't fun. I have been reading some of the reviews for top end pocket camera. For the bigger cameras DSLR I have very little knowledge of. I don't think EOS 1D is the type of camera you lug around on vacations.

Some of the rumors coming out, the LX 5 might have a fix lens with a 4/3 senors.  The Panasonic GF2 might be out in Oct or early next year.

if you don't need HD video recording, just get the old Canon 5D.
get a 2nd second hand one..
it's much cheaper than a brand new Mark II, but the IQ on a kit lens is about the same for both cameras..

If someone is serious about photography, the most important thing is the glass. The quality of lens makes a world a difference as the 100m f2.8 macro lens noted above is a excellent L-series lens. So definitely save a few bucks on the body and use it towards a nice set of lenses.
