DArtagnan, do you know how much those rail passes cost off of the top of your head?

It was around GBP200 25 years ago ... guess that's no help whatsoever ...

like I said, call your travel agent

or if that's too much trouble, try a google search:  http://www.google.com.hk/search? ... ;q=europe+rail+pass

This is probably a good summer to backpack give the financial crisis.  With euro beaten down and the quid even worse must be finding some attractive deals.  The flow of tourism to Europe likely will increase given the economic situation. It probably does not affect the backpacking crew as much who are always going to keep costs down.  But bet you are upgrading a bit for the same euro

www.wikitravel.com is a free alternative to LP... totally agree with the advice that you've followed. Use it to get an overview and go from there. Europe was never very interesting for me... SE Asia on the other hand... never get bored.

kinda obvious but the better you plan, the cheaper it is. also be aware of various holidays bc if you assume u can get any hotel or place to crash...you can get stuck homeless bc of a major local holiday.

if you are going to take the train all around, then usually there is a decent place to stay hotel wise near the station.  scouting out places now in the internet age is alot easier than when you had no clue and really had to really on the books for your plan.  then again, people did it so maybe the internet is not as essential as everyone thinks it is.
