Everyone handles these things differently, like alcohol. Some people love it, others hate it, others find an addiction and let it ruin their lives. I believe that everyone should try all the good things and all the bad things in life - just for the experience. (provided it does not give you long term damage, like hardcore drugs or something) But a lot of these life lessons need to be figured out the hard (and adventurous) way. Let him figure it out on his own, make stupid mistakes, and learn from it.
