I don't know which Taiwan you've been to but the Taiwan that I've been do not have better looking girls.  But for some odd reason, Taiwanese women in NYC are amongst the hottest looking in the Asian community, go figure.

Most women (I'm including yours!) respond well to their men's hard efforts. As any guy that's cooked for a woman can tell you; the ladies don't care if it tastes like shit, they just like that you're putting in heart and effort.

This goes for mandarin or any other skill; she may be lazy to teach you, but I am willing to bet that if you showed initiative and learn on your own, she'll be more than happy to help you and give you guidance along the way.

However, one thing that my girl friends have complained about is that they get irritated when their BF/husbands ask that they teach them Canto/Mando. They don't have any previous training and have no idea where to start...or that they're just lazy bitches! LOL

EDITED for MAJOR typo/brainfart.

Even 5 years ago I would have agreed with you sexpert, but there's been a big change in the women over here recently. There are a lot of real foxes running around Taipei now. Those crazy stockings worn under miniskirts or just sweaters that barely cover their butt cheeks really do it for me!

But I would never say Taiwanese women are any better looking than Chinese women from other parts of China. When fashion and nutrition on the Mainland are up to 1st-world standards, Chinese women are going to blow the fashion world away.

TV and movies have relatively fast speaking dialogue.

I learned largely thru Karaoke. If you like a song, you learn it, and then sing it over and over.
You can youtube almost any ktv video now and easily find it.

and if you are in china, you get to go to (relatively) cheap KTV where you sing songs you love, flirt with hot chicks, do the hot chicks..... all the while you are actually LEARNING MANDARIN!

That will beat any classroom hands down any day!

But seriously, the best way to learn a language is thru force (i.e. put yourself into an environment where you have choice other than to speak the target language) and fun (doing social things that require using the language, dinner, date, hanging out, etc)

Watching TV will aid your listening comprehension, but it won't do much to improve your speaking ability. Speaking a language is a behavior - i.e., it's something you do - and you can't learn to speak a language by listening to others speak it, any more than you can learn to play tennis by sitting in the stands at Wimbledon. That's the big mistake people make when learning languages, and it explains why so many people give up because they aren't making any progress. For this reason language teaching techniques have changed in the past 20 years. When I was a kid, you'd sit in class and listen to the teacher drone on and maybe speak one or two sentences per class. Now the teaching philosophy is that the teacher should speak no more than 20% of the time with the rest given over to intensive student practice.

Since more people speak Mandarin Chinese on earth than any other languages, it may behoove everyone to learn a bit of the basics.

There are always some population of Chinese in every major city.  It may not be a bad idea to be friends with them.  You may pick some basic vocabulary.

It's been the other way around for me. Girls in Taipei have been getting uglier in the last ten years while girls in China are getting crazy hot (especially in big cities.)

It's true that there is a Chinese population in every major city, but you shouldn't expect them to speak Mandarin. Most of the overseas Chinese populations are mainly Cantonese speakers. It is changing, but just keep this in mind.

yeah i guess your are right. If i really took some effort in she will give it a shot at teaching me. It is hard to say go teach me and expect her to do it. But it sure would help if she spoke to me in mandarin that would be a start. On second thoughts.. she just lazy bitch

Speaking versus Comprehension

I don't know if others have this issue, but I find ALL foreign languages much harder to HEAR than to TALK.  I can pick up and read or speak a language pretty quickly, but man is my ear slow to comprehend.  I'm particularly susceptible to regional accents throwing me off.

Any good tips on improving one's aural comprehension?  I've tried listening my ears off (plugging in for 20 hour flights, etc.) to no avail.  I can read and speak something in a matter of months, but the listening takes me years.

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.
