I have been out a few times with a bunch of ABCs, CBCs and BBCs and none of them spoke very much Chinese and it was rather funny when waitresses discovered that the only gwailo in the group spoke better Chinese than any of the ethnic Chinese guys...
I had that happen in Bangkok once a couple of years ago. A former Chinese GF (born in Shanghai, but raised in the US), who was then going to business school in Singapore, came to visit me for the weekend. We went out for lunch one day. The waitress brought two menus, gave her one in Thai, and me one in English. Since about 15 percent of Thais are Chinese, this was a natural assumption to make. But the waitress was very surprised when we switched menus!
Have fun, CGP
