Perhaps you have lost your sense of smell due to old age but ask any Chinese person living in America who has had this experience rather than just assuming that it's not true.

I've spent as much time with Chinese people in the last 30 years as I have with white people, and none of my Chinese friends has ever mentioned a "weird stench" peculiar to the homes of Caucasians.

Perhaps you are referring to the homes of people who use strong cheeses and spices in ethnic cooking?

I think a lot of this odor thing is a stereotype. I've frequently noticed strong body odors in packed subways cars in Japan, HK and Taipei, for instance, so it's not like only Westerners have body odor problems.

Exactly, it is not just cooking but it is everything including body odors.  But I am not talking about BO in particular, I am talking about the family scent.  Everyone is different, even the Fujianese and the Toisanese here in NYC.  Toisan and Fujian are not that far apart and yet the houses smell extremely different, the people smell extremely different but a large proportion of Cantonese people who enter White people's houses here come up with the same adjective to describe the scent.

Well, all I can say sexpert, is that you obviously have a keener sense of smell than me. But I still feel "weird stench" is a wild exaggeration. You make it seem as if going into a gwailo's home is like a trip to the dump.

I don't know why I'm so attracted to Asian women - it's been 30 years since I had my dick in a white girl!! - it's some mysterious chemical thing that takes place deep in the mind. But it's more than skin, or body hair, or those lovely, sweet-tasting, odorless pussies. It's almost organic this lust I feel for Asian chicks. God save me.

I wouldn't rule him out Mars ... I've heard from other sources that Westerners smell funny to many Asians (especially Japanese), primarily because we eat more dairy products.

Not heard anyone comment about it socially, but seen it in some literature about intercultural issues.

... so maybe he does have a keen sense of smell ...

The phrase I objected to was "weird stench". And yes, this thing about funny smelling foreigners is well represented in Japanese folklore, esp among the out and out racists. Do a web search on "Nihonjinron" for some really bizarre Japanese ideas about the superiority of the Japanese body.

However, when I was living in Japan and fucking dozens of Japanese women, who didn't seem to have any objection to my body odor, the complaint I heard constantly from Japanese girls was how "jiji kusai" the middle aged Japanese salarymen were who they were forced to stand next to in the crowded subways. ("jiji kusai" means the stink of middle-aged men)

the thing about smell is you very quickly get used to it - new smells stand out but you don't notice even quite foul smells that are constantly there.  Stands to reason ... otherwise noone would ever go around smelling bad ... reality is we don't notice our own smell, and that's the reason!

ergo the JGs who are attracted to gaijin will quickly get over the difference in smell ...

There's another thing that happens, and that is that smell anchors to our reflexes at a very deep level.  Something to do with family bonding I guess, like dogs and monkeys.

So that means the same gaijin-loving JGs and may actually get turned on by the smell of a foreigner ... just as they're turned off by the smell of guys who make them feel uncomfortable.

There was once a guy at school who I didn't know well, but the first time I met him he walked past my bed in the dorm after throwing up (he'd binged on cheap wine).  For the next 5 years I couldn't see him without instantly re-experiencing the smell of vomit - poor guy, he was totally normal and friendly (and totally clean of course) but I never got over that smell and couldn't bring myself to be friendly.

On the flip-side I had a GF once who got anchored to the smell of some ear-drops I was using at the time.  It wasn't strong, but there'd be a lingering whiff left around my ears ... which is where her nose would be when we were having sex.  She got to associate the smell with orgasm ... later she told me the smell used to be enough to turn her on.

anyway, one guys weird stench is another's rose garden ...

Obviously you have strong ideas about odors. Look Dart, 'stench' is a foul odor. Even sexpert didn't imply that white people themselves reek - he reserved that honor for their homes. And the idea that all the Japanese women I slept with were attracted to me because of my gaijin smell is the kind of thing I'd expect to hear from some insecure, gaijin-hating Japanese wingnut. On the list of things that attract Japanese women to foreign men, odor has got to be way at the bottom of the list; somewhere below being a skillful lover, and actually having the balls to ask a woman to bed.

Yes we all have our own individual odors, but that doesn't mean white people all have similar odors, i.e., that there is an identifiable white-person odor.

And, btw, the 'Nihinjinron' Japanese also think other Asians stink as well; so believe me, you are not doing your argument any favors by quoting what the Japanese think about anything, because the stereotypes all derive from these racist, the Japanese are a uniquely pure people, the Emperor is really God, Japan invaded China to save Asia from the white man crowd.

Dogs, btw, have a sense of smell a million times more acute than Homo Sap.

... and my point is that smell is
  subjective and
we tend not to notice ubiquitously present smells

as a result of which we are the worst person to ask whether or not we smell, let alone whether we smell nice or not.

Of course the probability is you yourself practice good hygiene and that the majority of people find the smell of your apartment pleasant.

I'm just saying there's nonetheless a possibility that someone from an Asian culture might well find the apartment of a given caucasian disturbing, even though other caucasians might disagree with him.
No more no less.

We aren't really disagreeing on anything here Dart.

Yes, I agree that we aren't the best judge of our own odors. And you are right that an Asian walking into the home of an Indian who cooks with all sorts of odoriferous ethnic spices would certainly be very aware of the differing odors in the air.

I started all this because I objected to sexpert's blanket statement that the homes of all white people have a "weird stench" Surely you can see how ridiculous that is. If, on the other hand, he'd just said "smelled odd", fine.

I've been into the homes of many dozens of people in Italy, England, Taiwan, HK, Japan, Canada, the USA, Argentina, France, and none of these people - who live very different lives from what I'm used to - were living in homes that stunk. The only exception was a Korean acquaintance whose house smelled strongly of kimchi.

I would have ignored sexperts "weird stench" comment, if not for all the ridiculous stereotypes that exist here in Asia about the supposedly foul odor of all non-Asians. In particular, as I mentioned above, the Japanese were always saying things like this - especially those Japanese who had no experience whatsoever of direct contact with foreigners.

preface: my comments do NOT mean I agree with everything sexpert writes ...

But when I read his comment it didn't actually strike me as either racist or necessarily even fuzzy thinking, it struck me as a report of his experience.  I was certainly not offended because he's never visited my own home ... and I'd probably not even be offended if he did find it smelled weird to him.

"Whenever I go into a White person's home, there is a weird stench  [... snip ...]  I bet when White people enter my home, it smells odd to them too."

OK I will challenge whether ALL the white people's homes he's visited strike him with a "weird stench", or to the same degree, but it's certainly a possibility and he does balance his view.  Certainly, my own experience of visiting people's homes is they all smell different, and sometimes it does take a particular effort for me to be comfortable.

I also observe he might be unusually sensitive to smells, very much the opposite of me.

"I think my SO and I had so much in common that there was no way I was going to marry another person, our houses probably smelled the same because I never smelled anything odd about her house when I went. "

Forgive me if I'm splitting hairs again!!    Just idling the brain

I agree there's a lot of harm done by sharing (and even by tolerating) racist stereotypes.  I just wanted to comment that this one didn't strike me as racist per se.

Sexpert doesn't need to enter your home to know it's stinks, all he has to do is catch sight of your skin color from across the room - that's how good his sense of smell is. Something similar is at work in his judgments concerning the moral character of all WGs.

But if we're going to split hairs, notice that tho he states white peoples homes have a "weird stench", his own home merely "smells odd". I do appreciate the extra effort he took to appear fair-minded, but it was obviously just a calculated attempt to avoid criticism.
