A lot of this is just a matter of chemistry. Experiments have shown that we form opinions on people after just a second or so of observation; someone will walk into a room, male or female, and you know instantly whether or not you like the person. No pickup line is going to make up for lack of chemistry.

Referring to your earlier point, the real skill comes in making sure the ugly girl doesn't become jealous, which admittedly is hard. All this talk of pickup lines is bringing back all these memories of the times when I was single and trying to score in bars.  Another pickup line has just come to me.  My best mate used to always go up to girls in nightclubs and say it was his birthday and whether he could get a birthday kiss.  Surprisingly, he had a very high success rate of getting a mouth kiss but not necessarily any between-the-sheets action. I never tried it personally.

You're right and something similar happened to me a few years ago when I was sharing a flat with a very good-looking male friend. Women have the reputation of being great talkers, and like everyone else, I just assumed that was true; but then I read an article about research that demonstrated that whenever a man is introduced into a group of women, the entire dynamic of the conversation alters, and the man does all the talking. It's true. I've noticed this time and again; it's always the man who goes on and on trying to impress the women, while normally talkative women will then sit there and pretend to be interested. Even a guy who normally doesn't say much in a conversation with other guys, once he finds himself surrounded by women, will suddenly feel the need to establish control and demonstrate his knowledge and competence about all things.

However, if the guy is with his girlfriend, i.e. in an established relationship, he'll sit there and say nothing while the woman does all the talking. So for a guy, aggressive talk is part of the mating ritual. The problem is that if a guy only talks about himself - which is usually the case - he can come across as insensitive, aggressive and egoistic. Women are well aware of this dynamic, so when a guy they've just met demonstrates an interest in the girl rather than just talk at her, it usually makes a favorable impression - tho here too, it has to appear to be a genuine interest rather than just a tactic.

Actually, spoken Mandarin is not that difficult; there is no grammar to Chinese in the Western sense. If you're going to be in this part of the world for some time, you would be doing yourself a great favor if you picked up the lingo. In my experience, anyone can learn a language if he ditches the defeatist attitude and goes about it properly.
