I am asian...forget accent. When Hker look at me, they automatically know I am not from around...then the guessing game starts where I am from (which always humors me). The physical build, haircut, way you dress, color tone maybe, etc...are usually all dead giveaways.
Even I am friends from HK but left for 15 or 20+ yrs...then sometimes certain accents creep in & they can sorta tell something is offish if the locals are sharp with their listen skills
