I met two ladies that were from Shanghai living in the USA.  The way they always dressed with all their makeup and jewelery. They look down on the poorer local Chinese. Always saying bad things about the poorer locals.

Well, this reputation of Shanghainese women is not new. It's been around for ages, perhaps it's not fair to generalize, but most Chinese men that I know tells me just about the same...Shanghainese gals ARE indeed more demanding than most Chinese girls, they are materialistic, wants to be in control of the household (husbands takes the backseat - Queen Control?) and snobbish! So Weelock's probably got the same information as I have.

I think in Hong Kong, most people perceive Shanghainese to be more cultured and is of higher class than other Chinese...something to do with the fact that Shanghai was like the first cosmopolitan city of modern China? And in fact here in China, the Shanghainese do perceive themselves as higher "caste" people as compared to other Chinese.
