Welcome gonuts - but that is NOT the way things work here. We DO expect every member to pull their own weight - and that is to contribute and to share and care with us your own experiences, reports, information etc.

And if you are contemplating just making "weird" comments as your way to participate - well.... I'd warn you against doing that as we also do NOT appreciate snide remarks or fluff one-liners; you do that and you're pretty well assured that somebody is going to dock you -K points which reduces your reading count and you'll never be able to make it to RA 20 or above.

And access to REAL pictures i/o the heavily photoshopped DB pictures is the reason why most of us do try to reach higher RA's - and in the process learn to actually like participating and sharing the camarederie that we do have on this board.

Or do I need to make a day trip just to feed the damn fish?

Sorry guys - feel free to neg me if you so deem necessary - but I really would appreciate it if you could advise me on this as I know absolutely Zilch about carp.

And oh I e-mailed my friend and gave him hell for doing this; and he replied and  told me to not worry too much - the carps were actually left in the pond by the previous tenants who moved out and also just abandoned them and he thinks that these fish were not fed for at least 2 weeks before he moved in.  Is this possible?

Further to my series about my uncle and Hong Kong in the 60"s....

Was again chatting with my uncle about his “prime days” in Hong Kong – and again, fascinating stuff.  He took pains to relay to me what Hong Kong was all about then - in order for me to understand some context as to his recollections – and I thus want to write about this now to let readers here also “feel” what it was like back then.

Hong Kong was still very much a British Crown Colony where the British “masters’ still reigned supreme (quite haughtily too he adds), but to a large extent, quite fairly. English was THE language to learn, and anything Western – whether products, music or culture etc was very much more preferable than the chaos that China was during the time. And then there was the very marked Class distinction even amongst the Chinese – you were either amongst the very few from the major families in Hong Kong and/or Asia – or you were not, with hardly ANY middle class at all. SE Asian families, Datuks, Tan Sris etc was also revered and can you believe this – Filipinos were then considered to be so much more prosperous and advanced than Hong Kong  – as indeed, in the early 60’s, the Philippines WAS way ahead economically versus most other Asian countries. It was either 2nd or 3rd in the ranking of the wealthiest Asian countries after Japan, in terms of its per capita GDP (Actually – a real travesty – that ONE dictator could have turned such a prosperous country into a practically bankrupt one – all within the tenure of his one iron fisted “rule’).

Anyway, the wealthy in Hong Kong really had it good - for the greatest wealth is accumulated when there is a large pool of poorly paid labour. People in Hong Kong now complain about the Ginni coefficient and the income disparity – have they really already forgotten what it was all about in those days? Man, the Wall Street Occupiers/Protesters would have shat in their pants! Most workers (both blue collar as well as white collars) made do with salaries of about HK$300/month – but an afternoon tea at the Peninsula would have easily cost that PLUS PLUS for just one family at the time! And just to emphasize how unfair things were at the time, my uncle told me that in 1964, when water was rationed out to all homes for only 4 hours every 4 days, he was actually at the Country Club SWIMMING practically daily!!

But as the well off was such a minority, Hong Kong indeed was a small place and there were only a few places that were acceptable to go to and be seen at. The Hilton was the first International brand to build their hotel in Hong Kong (at the site where the Cheung Kong Centre is at now) whilst hotels like the Peninsula, Mandarin, Miramar, Luk Kwok etc were all just local operations. It was wildly successful from day one as THE place to go to – Cat Street was the coffee shop at the Hilton where my uncle tasted his first Milk Shake and real Hot dog (unlike those at On Lok Yuen- which was then just canned Sausages on a sweet soft bun with tartar sauce – which is how locals had interpreted a hot dog to be), sat around hours at – just to chat and flirt with young people of his ilk. Hilton Eagle’s Nest was where Michael Remedios would sing out his ballads to accompany your dinner, and the Hilton Grill was THE place to get American style steaks. And oh of course, “The Den” was the hippest discotheque on Hong Kong side whilst Captain’s bar at the Mandarin was the place to go to romance your gal whilst listening to Danny Diaz and the Checkmates.

Kowloon side was a totally different scene where the factory owners live at – and who at the time was considered a bit nouveau riche compared to those who lives on Hong Kong side and who were engaged in finance, banking, trading etc. The Scene Disco at the Peninsula basement was THE place for youngsters to be at, whilst The Bayside at Chung King Mansion was also considered to be a great place to wine/dine/dance the night away to the music of GianCarlo and His Italian Combo and The Fabulous Echoes (who later emigrated to Hawaii, re-named themselves the Society of Seven and became perennial headliners there). The Firecracker bar in the basement of the President Hotel – renamed the Hyatt – was THE late night rendezvous where one can enjoy the “cutting edge music of the time” as performed by the Wynners, the Blue Star Girls’ Combo etc.  TsimShaTsui then was THE naughty place in Hong Kong – with quite a few actual brothels which was well patronized by these big shots – as opposed to the “lower class” facilities In Mongkok/Yaumati where they would rather be dead than caught at!

Private clubs – real private clubs were also all the rage then – where a group of like minded guys would either rent or buy an apartment and decorated it as a place where they can get together, have dinner with other “members” and their Gals/Concubines, play mahjong and then retire to the bedrooms to take care of business.  These private clubs were very lavishly decorated and one even had the very FIRST Jacuzzi installed in Hong Kong – imported all the way from the States, but which then needed a voltage convertor to work!
