Is it normal for phone appointment agents to not answer their phone?

Tried phoning a couple in North Point a few times, sometimes the phone is off, sometimes just keep ringing.

Wasn't strange hours I was trying either, between 12 noon and 4 pm.

I guess they are humans and can't answer all calls.

Last year I called for a phone appointment in North Point, se sent me the address by SMS, and told me to call him back when I arrived at the building. Once I got there, I tried to call him and it was unanswered for many times. Was feeling quite bad there, in the hall of the building, with neighbors knowing why I am there I guess. Finally, a woman took the phone, and she answered like "Wrong number, no such girl lives here" etc... I tried to explain, but it didn't get anywhere. I was completely pissed off and left. 10 min later, while i was already on my way back home, he called me back, and I ignored the call as well...

I was just musing to myself about how we in Hong Kong must look like such tempting fat gooses to the conmen of this world.

Because of our low tax rates and also how rapidly our real estate market has risen..and still stays up, quite a lot of Hong Kong citizens are sitting on assets worth millions. Compare that to, say the U.S., where the average HOUSEHOLD income (usually with both husband and wife working and the kids working part time etc) is only US$57,000 anually BEFORE taxes - how many Americans can actually have a sizeable nest egg.

In Hong Kong, a Taxi driver who runs his own taxi is already worth at least US$500,000 - coz that's how much his taxi is worth. Add to this his house which he scrimped and saved and fully paid off for (remember, we do NOT have 30 year mortgages like other countries) plus his savings - he's easily a US$ millionaire.

And we here on this board - where we've got guys proudly proclaiming spending HK$50,000 in one month JUST for mongering - I mean, if I was a conmen from elsewhere - I'd high-tail it here to reap the harvest!!

So, I'm just suggesting - be careful of things that's too good to be true - even on this - our sex board.

Not only we look like fat gooses (though it's far to be true for a lot of people), we look also very lucky and happy : Food (best food/price rate I know, very rich in term of variety and quality), cheap branded clothes and IT, girls (both civies and WG), night life, travelling places, etc...

But the big downside for me is that housing price (unfortunately, I am not one of those bastard young expat bankers !). When I arrived, it was OK for me to live in shoebox, but it's getting harder with time.   And outside people can't really realize it until they experience it for months.

So compared to the rest of the world, I happen to think Hong Kong is the best place to be, but the worse to live in

Just how big is your shoe box? Is it like Harry Potter style?

Im quite fortunate that my parents own a flat in HK, that they dont use (they are in the UK), so I can live in it rent free.

But its only about  500 sq feet and a far cry from the detached houses that I am used to back in the UK.

Kinda got used to the smaller size, but sometimes wish I had a back garden to laze around in to read a book, a place to put my bike etc.

But then again its a lot colder in the UK and you can really only make the most of your garden for 4 weeks of the year, wg's cost a lot more, not as much choice and the service is not as good.

So in conclusion, HK is a much better place to be. Where else can you find such a good selection of Wg's, a relatively safe environment to punt and good value wg's at the lower end of the market ie. Temple street walkers at $150-200 a pop, up the the higher end $2000 HG's.

I think we got it good.

Gotta agree with ICIM... HK is a pretty good deal.  Yeah, my place is tiny, but if we're honest, the rest of the world seems to be in need of financial repair.  Can you see yourself relocating to the US or Europe?  No thanks.

Good food, affordable WGs and unbeatable weather.  We haven't even started on the fact it is cheaper to have a bespoke suit than an Armani off-the-peg.

I'm here to stay as long as I can.  Way too many WGs to work my way through.

Recruitment agencies?

Everybody in HK will tell you the best way is networking (though I am not 100% convinced)

But if you are sure of your qualification, you can go directly to head hunters, or go to check your country local business chamber. They often get job offers.

As for ads online, like JobsDB, I heard it's more targeting locals, so don't waste too much time on it.

The Saturday edition of the South China Morning Post has the largest number of Ads for more senior positions.

Spot those head-hunter ads and sign on to their web sites for updates on jobs availability and also to put your resume on their data base.  They will put you on their mailing list of job vacancies and if one to you liking turns up, all you do is do a few clicks and you're in the running!

just wondering if it is easy and convenient for a foreigner to open a bank account in HK? Would we need a referral?

I opened mine at Bank of China, very quick. If you take the basic account with bankbook and ATM card, everything is free ! Absolutely no fees ! But not Visa/Master card... unless you accept to pay. To open it, you need to have a proof of address in HK.

As for other banks, they have minimal deposit for account opening.

I know a guy who opened accounts in HK as tourist, it was more than 1 year ago, maybe it changed. Just your country should not be on their black list, they are afraid of money laundrying.
But I think they still need a proof of address in your country.

I am a member of another board on a different subject where scams occur quite often.  You really have to watch out for people who you meet on a message board and asks you for money whether it's borrowing or exchanging, or selling you something.  Scammers can be very sophisticated.  Also, keep your identity a secret.  There is no reason to reveal to people who you are.

I basically am an internet newbie quite unaware of the ACTUAL dangers that lurks around cyberspace - naively thinking that since such boards as ours is anonymous, what possible harm can happen to me?!

Of late we've had a spate of Fake reports and Fakers here who persist on time after time trying to gain Reading Access and acceptance amongst us -  and I was really flumoxed as to what possible motive they could ever have for trying so hard.

Your post has helped me form a clearer picture as to what some of these fakers may be trying to perpetrate here.
