Poker in Hong Kong

Hi guys,

This might seem quite random on here but does anyone know where I could buy a poker set in Hong Kong??

I am organising a guys poker night for December.

I have tried looking on line but cannot find one anywhere & I am old fashioned about buying things on line. Especially since a friend had his bank account cleaned out from buying on line.

Thanks!

Are their poker rooms in Macau casino's?

If so, what are the limits and how does it work?

Usually in USA we play 1/2 NL but since it's like 1 USD = 7.5 HKD, wonder how that works?

Checked Macau out a couple weeks ago. There used to be some HKD 5/10 tables, but now the lowest stakes are HKD 10/25. Checked Venetian and Grand Lisboa.

Also Petay, last time I bought a set in the Ladies Market, but it was a rare find and the quality of the chips were bad (i.e. after playing a few times, the paint from the chips began to peel. don't think it was even made of clay). If its for a one time use, it might be alright.

There is a sports shop on Nathan Rd TST (345 Nathan rd), its on the left hand side when walking towards Kowloon from TST. Not sure the name of it, but they had few last time I was there.

I believe any of the sports shop would be your best bet. If you had told me earlier, I could have picked one up for you on my last visit (<50 USD + pint of beer gets you a case with nice chips like one shown below).

Macau has several casinos offering poker, they are : Grand Lisboa, Venetian, Wynn, and Starworld.

The limits in common play are 10/25, 25/50, 50/100.  If you are looking for a bigger game than that, Wynn is your best bet.  If you are a super high roller, then you may want to check out Starworld, although their 2/4k, 3/6k and up are often invite-only affairs.

I'm not too certain where you would buy chips in Hong Kong, since I custom-ordered my sets online.  However, if you can spare a trip to Macau, I suggest making a day run to the Grand Lisboa (but not on Tuesdays), and picking up the Pokerstars APPT set for about 100 USD.  Far better than the one pictured above, and it plays decently, although not as well as the top-tier clay sets.  The set pictured above is a commonly-sold set, and I everybody I know that has one like that comments that the colors tend to run and stain the white chips and markings.

Have fun!

10/25 limits are I guess 1/2 NL

considering 1 USD = 7.5 HKD

Cool, I usually just play Baccarat at the Casinos and never seen signs that point to a poker room, can't wait to play some NL poker!

I wouldn't convert it that way, it's actually a lot bigger than a typical US/Canada 1/2 game.

You're really playing more like 1.5/3.5, and the max buy in is typically 200bb, so you are in a bigger game with deeper stacks.

Good luck.

Didn't see any last time I went to Starworld, can you tell me where the tables are located?

Thanks for the heads up. I'm usually a 1/2 NL player, 5/10 NL when bored but I've been playing 1/2/5 NL recently too lol which has LOTS of action

5000 HKD max buy-in for 10/25, not bad

markreves, do you play a lot @ Macau? How is the scene and players there?

The Hard Rock poker room in City of Dreams closed a long time ago.  They cleared the space for additional VIP tables.

I have never heard of a poker room in MGM.  Unless it opened in the last 6 weeks, I would have to say it doesn't exist.  You may be talking about the Wynn here as they are adjacent properties.

The Starworld poker room is on the 5th or 6th floor, I can't recall the exact floor, but just look for the Suncity VIP floor and you'll find it.

I play a fair bit of poker in Macau.

In general the game is a little soft with a few regulars punctuated by an influx of tourist fish.

I don't find it hard to win consistently here, but I rate the rooms in the order of Venetian, Starworld, Grand Lisboa, Wynn in order of toughness of the regs.

Poker is growing in Macau, with record breaking fields for the tournies.  There is one right now where first place is 500k USD, and next year will feature a 100,000 HKD buyin event.

You know how it is in poker, whatever it takes to keep entertained =)

In regards to your question, you can probably make do with the APPT set they sell in the Grand Lisboa Casino, Macau.  Comes in 300/500 chip configurations for about 100 usd for the bigger set.  Not the best I've seen, but better than what those non-specialty stores will pawn to you.

I find the game in Macau different from the game in Australia where I play most of my casino games. The players are much looser and the tendency for all-ins and large pots are much higher. It must be the Chinese Gene!!!

The game in Macau is very different from the one in Crown, imo.

I definitely play a different game here than in other countries.  What you say is true, but by that definition, you should realize its not that hard to win then.  You just have to be able to ride the variance train, avoid tilt from getting one outered on the river, and tighten up post flop.

If you are primarily a preflop player, you will have a lot of problems in Macau.  If you play well postflop its not hard to take it away from most players.  What I see people do too often is 3/4-bet light preflop against players who will refuse to fold with 22-AJ.

That being said, the game has gotten tougher over the last two years, less fish, and the regs have learned a bit of poker since then.

I think if I were to post my overall record here, nobody would believe me.

Suffice to say, when I sit down at a table, most of the regs here will be uncomfortable, and a fair few of them will transfer tables to get away from my style of play.

I play up to 200/400 HKD, and I will venture up to 300/600 if that's the only game running.  I don't mind playing 10/25 either though, as your win rate there can be absolutely sick.

I've been playing some form of poker for over 17 years, so I can definitely hold my own.  I do consider myself somewhat of a tournament fish though, unless its PLO or PLO8.
