What a fucked up senario.... I would not wish this on anyone....I thought going with a " TOUR" was supposed to be the " SAFE" option to go on holiday....

and the police force (even their SWAT team) is soooo poor quality and useless!!! They look like just having party in there....

This is a sad reminder that the Philippines is a dangerous place. This was not the first incident that HK tourists have been murdered in the Philippines. Apart from the police, many civilians also own guns and are trigger happy.

Tragic incident.

This doesn't happen often (as in I can't recall when I've seen something this bad), but reflects poorly on the Philippines.

Their SWAT team is really useless, probably will get investigated for such a poor performance.

I don't agree with the trigger-happy scenario, I've yet be in a situation over the last 15 years where a shot is fired.  Lots of guns though, half of which probably don't work from the rust and non-maintainence.

maybe he's used to seeing this sort of thing all his life ... his father was also killed by bullets !

and he still has a bullet in his neck.

i think no one expected the outcome to be so tragic. hostage taking happens a lot, but very rarely on foreign tours. the guy was just using it as venue to make demands. unfortunately, the strategists screwed it up, by bringing his brother, who agitated him, then arresting his brother, which agitated him further.

then the bus driver escaping and claiming that all hostages have been killed. that prompted the police assault on the bus.

When I heard the news I immediately remembered the movie "The Negotiator" ... sounds sickeningly like a copy-cat situation: veteran cop who feels he's been framed, goes postal, and takes hostages ...  

Unfortunately in the movies you know it'll work out in the end, with the hero being vindicated and the villains implicating themselves in their own conspiracy at the end

but that's not real life.  There are no winners in this story.

The police should have analyzed the situation themselves and not take just the word of the driver. According to today's newspaper, the policeman who committed the atrocious murders was being investigated for excess corruption and was brutal when he didn't get paid. Sadly, corruption is still a way of life in the Philippines and don't think this can ever be eradicated as too many politicians and officials are involved.

Whore shit!!! The sniper(s) is just blind or falling asleep during the ordeal. There were so many chances to take him down from open.

Just also read in the news that HK Chief Executive, Donald Tsang said he had tried to call Philippine President Benigno Aquino but could not get through for nearly 36 hours. This is a disgrace as Aquino should've at least given an account of what has happened. This Aquino is a poor statesman.

I watched a lot of this live and could not beleve they did not take this guy out when they had 4 or 5 clear shots at him. The police looked like idiots. Very Very sad. They said they had a swat team there. I dont know why they didnt shoot this guy.

The claim is that they don't use fatal force as a first option, if the hostage taker looks like he will release the hostages.

Given the fact that he did release all the children and the elderly at first, they thought he would give up without harming anybody.

However, due to lack of training, they didn't cue into his increased agitation and came crashing in too late to save the 8 that died.

My opinion is that they should have had multiple snipers take him out the moment he came out to pose for the cameras.  Hostage takers should be executed IMHO.

i also watched the whole event in TV, it is just unbelievable that the police and SWAT are so useless. I still very anger about how they solve this event - they are just not serious!!!!

It has nothing to do with the useless fili police force.

I don't mean to be too cynical but it is a very rare occurance for all hostages to come out alive when held captive in places like the Philippines.  Like most of you I read the international news daily and there is always a hostage situation somewhere around the world.  It seems in some countries, having some hostages killed during negotiations or during the rescue attempt is considered normal and part of the risk.

If I had to be held hostage, I hope it happens in either French territory, British territory, Australian territory, American territory, and even to a degree China territory as these countries will really send their best ppl to resolve the situation.  These countries would have had the sniper take out the hostage taker if given any chance without hesitation and if needed the SWAT teams are willing to put themselves in harm's way to make sure none of the hostages are harmed or killed when they conducted the rescue attempt.  

In the SCMP today, I read that the cops in the Philippines were really nonchalant about the whole thing and thought it was being overblown by the media.  Plus many sought shelter from the rain instead staying focused on the target.  It took the cops over 1 hour from the time they approached the bus to actually getting into the bus to take out the hostage-taker.  Totally incompetent.
