Depending one when you go, your budget can be done.  If you are going smack middle of summer, high season, not sure if you can get anything decent for that price.  Best thing you can do is, compare hotels.com with a local travel agent at your Chinatown,

Go to New Lucky House in Jordan - right behind exit B on the MTR

There are several guest-houses, some are very clean and comfortable, you should be able to pick one up for $200-$300.

THEN you're right in the thick of it - KP, 32D, National Court, Jordan, TST, MK, all are within walking distance - I think there are even some girls still left in NLH itself ... you wouldn't even have to walk outside.

Or Ginza hotel is right next to Exit A, you can't miss its signage.  Also has very reasonable rates, and the building is also a 141 haven.

I've never stayed in one of these places, can you describe how it is here?  Usually I end up paying for a 400-500 mediocre hotel prebooked from NYC.

Empire Hotel CWB is in the price-range and is excellent.  Decent sized room, and brand new and clean, right next to Tin Hau MTR Station.

Well, I have good news for you: there's a whole market being served at the $150-$350 per night price bracket, and you can find good quality.

If you find you need "hotel" type amenities, like a big reception area, bars, restaurants, room service, an empty business centre, etc. stick with the hotels, that's what they charge for.  But if you don't need all that, and you just want a comfortable room with privacy and security, you can definitely save $$$ that would be better spent on and

There are lots of guest-houses, and quite frankly a lot of them are pretty terrible - they tend to be sub-divided apartment units in the big residential blocks, and can be quite dirty dark and damp.  But you can find good ones.

I myself stayed in New Lucky Guest House when I first arrived in HK - that was a LONG time ago but I guess it's still there - was on the 3rd floor.  It was clean, well run, and had everything I needed at the time:-
  Twin or double bed
  Ensuite bathroom
  Aircon
  TV
  Telephone
  24hr access
all for the very reasonable price of HK$250.  Probably gone up since, but you never know what deal you can get at offpeak times.

Ginza hotel is very similar quality, at a similar budget.

If you're motivated to get the best-best deal you can find it simply by looking around.  Allocate (say) half a day, leave your luggage somewhere, and knock on doors.  Don't be afraid to walk away, since you can find nice places without difficulty (e.g. the cheapest places are in Chunking Mansions ... but I've never even dared to look at those).

Jordan is a good area as it's so close to everything you want (there's even a minibus from Wanchai if that's your inclination) but there are also some in Causeway Bay that cost a bit more for the same quality.

If thought Empire Hotel Causeway Bay had quite small rooms (at least mine was small). For 2 days it was OK, but I couldn't stay more in such a small room as I need more space to feel confortable. But the room as modern and new so is the hotel. I loved the big screen tv. Empire Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui has bigger room but older and decorated very modestly. But I prefered the space and could stay longer than in Causeway bay. Moreover Emp. Hotel TST is perfectly located. Just 2 mn off Nathan Road.
Both hotels are in your range of price but I guess it depends of the period you'll be there.

Here are some pics of Hempire hotel in Causeway Bay (I'll post some pics of Empire TST in a following post):

Cool, but do they come with clean towels daily?  A room safe?  Internet access?  When I am doing short stays, 4 days or less, I am usually willing to pay a bit more for a nicer hotel with at least a pool and fitness center.  I've seen the ones on TVB and even though I know it's not a 100% representation, I would like to stay at least one night, just to experience it.  I worry about my documentation and money first.

room safe: no

internet: don't know, some will, but those that do will want to charge more.  You have a good chance of picking up PCCW wifi these days even if internet isn't formally provided.

pool and fitness centre: ROFL!!!   If you're in Jordan, just hop across to Kowloon Park for the huge indoor and outdoor pools, and other facilities.

Guess you need the full "Hotel" service though ...

Thanks man, I don't think these places will work for me.  Maybe if I were 15 years younger, but I think the little bit of extra money is much more "valuable" to me although I don't do the bars, restaurants, conference rooms and such, I do need a pool to do some laps and a fitness center for a bit of exercise.  With all the GREAT, GREAT, did I mention GREAT food in HK, I would easily pack on 10 lbs in 2 weeks if I didn't work some of it off swimming or exercising, I'm not 20 anymore you know?  ANd yea yea, I know fuck it off with WGs, but sex can only do so much and so long, LOL.... thanks for the helpful info, I can always pass it along to others who don't need the full service hotel.

Empire Chain of hotels provides in-room internet WIFI access for extra cost.  I remember about 120HKD per day, or 40HKD per hour.

Thanks for the helpful pics, bro.

What was the total damage per
day in each of those hotels?

And what about security, e.g.
was an in-room safe available?

If think it's a bit more expensive if you book through their website. It's better to book via www.agoda.com or www.opodo.co.uk

Yes internet rate was 120 $HK for one day, I don't remember about hourly rate.

Good punt
