Can someone suggest another means of transportation other then an expensive taxi or airport express.  I took the airport express and even at the first stop it was rather
expensive.  I know it's not all that bad but just wondering if anyone has for suggestion for a less expensive alternative.

Depending on how many people you are with.  If its 4 people then I would suggest going with taxi as it will run you around 300HKD for the trip.  If you are by yourself or with another person, they have these special 2 person tickets that you can buy when you get off the airport express.  I think it works out to like $170HKD for 2 from the airport to hong kong station.  Its a bit cheaper than using the regular octopus.

The usual route that I get (and most air hostesses get) is the S1 bus from the aiport to Tung Chung MTR station. That will cost HK$3.5. As soon as you hit the MTR station you can go practically anywhere, Central on HK island is HK$18, or MK for HK$13.5.

Quite a saving compared to the airport express which is nearer HK$100~

There are quite a few buses from the airport. I used the A11 from airport to north Point Ferry Terminal for $40 HKD.

Hmm that sounds even better than the A21 bus which takes 1hour and costs $33 from TST (opposite Chungking Mansions) to the airport, though the view from this bus is pretty impressive....


You know I've always wondered as to why it costs $14.6 from the bus from the airport all the way to Tai Po, and yet a shorter distance to get to Kowloon it costs $33, same with the MTR

From Taipo to TST its $9.6, while TST to the Island its $6.6 Tai Po is a hell of a lot farther away than TST to Kowloon right?

Bus is the cheapest way to get from and to the airport, but it really depends on your own situation. It depends on how many people you are traveling with and how much luggage you have. For taking bus, there are various options. I used the A11 before, but bro aaa888 has provided the best option so far.

Depends on what your ultimate destination is. For Kowloon or HK Island, you can take a bus, but I prefer the Airport Express for $100 and then they have free shuttles to specific hotels. And if you're doing a roundtrip, the fare is even cheaper.

if you but the tickets at the station it works out cheaper than octopus cards but don't forget the benefit of the airport express is no traffic so it will get you there in 25 minutes but more importantly all you baggage is checked in and you don't need to worry about it.  For me, the 60 dollars you would save by getting the bus is a small amount to pay to not queue at the airport to check bags in.  Depends on how tight you budget is.  One round trip on the bus could save you half the price of a walk up girl!

The station bag check is great - and added benefit of checking it 24 hrs in advance - this way you can check out of HK hotel day early go to Macau spend the night in a sauna

I can do one better than aaa888 in being a cheap a$$!

take the free Novotel shuttle and ride it to Novotel (about 5 min).  That will save you the $3.5HKD instead of taking the S1.  From there, you can take the local Tung Chung line (station is 1 block away from Novotel) and go to the Kowloon station, for $16HKD.  From the Kowloon station, take one of the free hotel shuttle buses A1 thru A6 to wherever your desitination is.  Or transfer at Lai King and take the Tsuen Wan line into TST.  Depends on your final destination, and how much luggage you have.

the bus is the cheapest way but it depend if you have lots of luggages or not and what time is your flight.

if you come from A merica or Europe and have a night flight and have a huge luggage, it's very useless towant to save hkd80 and bother with luggage all day in town.

Hongkong is the only city in the world that provide the in-town check-in, hkd100 is not that much for the service (you can also get cheaper ticket at a travel agency). it's either cheaper than a hotel late check-out fee.

for people who didn't know, the airport express ticket can be used within the 24 hour after your check-in. that's mean you can do your check-in at central or kowloon in the morning and send all your luggage to the airport, then enjoy your last day in town or you can even go to SZ or Macau. And at night, you just use the same ticket at the same airport express station that you did your check-in to go to the airport.

aaa888, your way bus+mtr is really the cheapest especially if need to go to hk island, half price compare to the A11 bus which is hkd40-45.
A11 use the west tunnel which is the most expensive tunnel in hk

Well there is an even cheaper way from airport to HK Island (Tin Hau is last stop), the E11 bus.  It is a $21 ride.  The advantages of this bus is that it leaves from a stop just several yards from the A11 stop at Airport, one doesn't have to do any transfers, it still has a luggage rack for your stuff, seats are still quite comfortable.  

Well the E in the name means it was established for the employees of the airport to use.  So that means the ride from airport takes almost 30 minutes longer than the A11 as the E11 bus goes all around the buildings of the airport to pick up airport staff, then before it heads out for the island.  

So if I had time, I would take this bus as I like to relax and hate dealing with transfers esp with luggage.  

There should 'E' versions of all the 'A' airport buses, so check the bus directory at the airport or check this website.

If I didn't have to lug heavy luggage or wanted to go to places that the buses don't go, then I would use aaa888's method of getting around as the mtr system is very convenient.

honestly though, with extra luggage (ie. more than 1), you will be glad to go on the airport express, trying to juggle 2 luggages with a laptop bag is not fun on the bus.

Yeah the free airport-express station to hotel buses (small shuttle buses) only work if you stay in the popular hotels.

Didn't know what marksebring's ultimate destination was, if it was somewhere like Sheung Shui then it would not be connected.

going to the Tuen Mun station, I don't see why you would need to be a guest of the hotel - just go to A18 desk, get on the shuttle bus to the hotel, then go to the train station.  I probably wouldn't do it, going back to the airport.  Now I will say that you'd have to be pretty ballsy to do that and honestly speaking I've never done it before, but unless the check in desk actually forces you to check-in to the hotel, you can always say that you haven't made a reservation yet with the hotel and you will do it at the hotel.  Is it worth the $3.5HKD?  Probably not. But just offering another way of being frugal.

I know the Royal View Hotel has a free bus shuttle service and no one is questioned if they are a quest or not.  I really doubt anyone would question you getting in line and
then on the bus.

From experience, I like the ride of the Airport Express.  It is comfortable and smooth.  The negative is the price and LONG walk to the MTR when you arrive in Central.  

I have taken the bus to Tung Chung to MTR.  While it is cheap, it is a long trip with many stops and transfers.   I prefer to take A-buses now since they are the best price to comfort ratio.
