Hong Kong tap water safe?

I was wondering is it safe to drink out of the tap, or faucet in Hong Kong?  What do you usually drink, bottle water, or juice?  Is it safe to swallow shower water?

chewie10, i would suggest you boil the tap water first before drinking it ... just for your own safety...  my family, we buy cases of bottled water a week and drink that instead. boiling tap water is only used for making cup noodles or coffee..

bottled water is the way to go as I only drink tap water in Canada ... at least i know my water is clean..

I try not to drink tap water anywhere. The New York Times has just run a series of articles on chemical pollution in the US water supply. It turns out local water districts aren't even required to test for a long list of dangerous chemicals.

I use personal water filters, but who knows what gets through. But that said, drinking the odd glass of tap water isn't going to harm you, not even in HK.

Though I believe it's ok to drink tap water ocassionally as I do it sometimes when forget to buy distilled water, I suggest you to boil the tap water before drinking it as HK gov don't recommend ppl to drink tap water directly.

i wouldn't recommend drinking the tap water from HK. Those waters came from Mainland china.
Best option would be boiled water, and bottled water.

frigging pussies! , HK water IS safe, however the issue is more the plumbing, in places like Mong kok the water works haven't been refurbished since WWII.

Thats part of the problem in that you fuck up your immune systems by keeping them too clean.

The immune system thing is true about germs - it seems children raised in antiseptic environments are more apt to develop asthma, for instance - not true about chemicals. Some US tap water has unhealthy concentrations of arsenic and industrial chemicals.

But bottled water - who really knows where it comes from?

At home, I use one of those Brita filters that remove chemicals. Some tap waters have an unpleasant chemical taste. Using tap water to make green tea, for instance, just ruins the taste of the tea.

If you ask for a glass of water in Starbucks, they take it directly from the tap - which I think is also filtered.

But I've drunk HK tap water many times without any problem.

Bottled water NOT that great!

MY S.O. ONLY used distilled water when my kid was a baby.  Result? - all sorts of dental problems as she wasn't getting the fluoride needed.

Also, one really never know what is in those other bottled waters - ESPECIALLY IN CHINA.  Read lots of reports of bottlers just bottling straight TAP water in a lot of countries without any standards/regulations.

I wonder what's getting into the bottled water from the bottle.  Just because you never put your bottled water in the microwave doesn't mean it didn't get heated to 140F on the truck ride over, or in it's container during shipping.

Personally, I've been drinking the tap water and the only side effect I've noticed is it makes me horny whenever I'm in HK.

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

Did you know that the level of fluoridation in Hong Kong is lower than the WHO standards?

Reason being that a few years after when they started fluoridating the water in Hong Kong, they found kids were OVER fluoridated - and the reason is that a lot of families in Hong KOng boil soup for hours on end (real Cantonese soup) and keep on adding water.

Result - overfluoridated kids!

The water supply is perfectly safe in Hong Kong. The only trouble is the plumbing in some of the older buildings. So it really depends on where you're staying. If in doubt - boil it, unless you want to waste your money on bottled water.

The problem I have is that the water is over-chlorinated and doesn't taste very good. So every night I fill a super-large kettle and use it the next day for drinking and cooking. The chlorine leaves the water after a few hours.

I take the hotel notice at face value that the tap water should not be consumed.  But I drink boiled water in HK and China both.  Even the bottle water, unless it is specifically distilled or filtered, it is just boiled water anyway.

a few years ago, I went by Chunking Mansions to get some money changed, and bought some bottled water next door.  Unfortunately, the water wasn't sealed with the plastic wrap like in most water.  Had a major severe case of diarrhea for the next 4 days.

If you buy bottled water, always make sure the plastic wrap is around the mouth.

My building is old enough that I still get an upset stomach after cooking and boiling the tap water.  And my building management do clean the water tanks once a month.  I guess it is the pipes that are bad.

Lucky for me, I can order those large office carboys (18 liters) of distilled water for only $25 a carboy.  Buy 2 and get free delivery.  Cheapest way to drink bottled water.

I've always wondered about the ice cubes that go in drinks here (e.g. McDonald's)  -whether they boil the water or it's straight from the tap.
