vegemite

ok aussie bros...this is way off topic here...but i would like to get some of your feedback on this item...i read an article in the paper or mag, forgot which publication...so i went grocery shopping the other day and saw vegemite on the shelf...out of curiosity, i bought a can.

toasted a piece of bread and spread the stuff on...my question for you experts is what are the best ways to prepare or to use vegemite?

alone w/ toast, if you use too much it's a bit salty...

thanks!

Ah, at last a serious Q&A topic!

The vegemite connoisseur ensures the bread is of the highest quality and only uses butter, no fake margarine spreads. Wholegrain or white bread can be alternated for variety of taste. Freshly baked bread still hot from the oven is the Pièce de résistance.

Users should start with very light quantity and build up volume as the palate matures and becomes accustomed to the taste.

Morning vegemite is best served on toast with tea. Fresh bread normally preferred after 11:00am.

Have you seen how much MSG is in that shit? , in HK I eat somewhere and feel kind of thirsty after eating but vegimite and marmite you feel incredibly thirsty after eating it..

And its also a nasty byproduct! , when they brew beer they scrape the scum off the top of it now and again , and it gets tuned into veggiemite/marmite.

Life is short very...

I knew Marmite was a product made from yeast extract but I had no idea it was from the scum of making beer...
I take my marmite like Froddo does but probably not with as much 'respect'. A nice piece of toast (actually, I find cheaper bread makes a better piece of toast but then again it depends on your preference) and I myself would go for a 'door step' piece of toast. Lightly buttered and Marmite-d. Fantastic start to the morning or a snack fit for a king (or lord or moderater in this case).

Off topic, but does marmite drilling cross your mind when we talk about this?

I know some guys will cringe, but I often eat it straight from the jar while watching a movie - a half spoonful at a time.  Like every other aussie kid, I was brought up on the stuff and love it.

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

For those of you old enough to remember the Men Down Under song

I've never had the stuff, but I once saw it on some talk show and the Americans who tasted it hated it as if they were eating shit.  I have American taste buds as well as Chinese taste buds, I will try anything once but that stuff really looks nasty and by the looks of other fellow Americans' faces after trying it, I probably won't like it either.  I'm guessing it is an acquired taste, sort of like 100 year old eggs, super aged cheeses, shrimp paste steamed fat pork, anchovy fish sauce from vietnam, Durian, HK stinky tofu (my personal favorite),  anyone else wants to add to the list?

Well, in the UK they do say 'you either love it or hate' as a slogan for Marmite. Yes it is salty, ok it might be the by-product of making beer but it's still bloody good stuff!
Did you guys know that the Malaysian eat Marmite/Vegemite/Brovril in a totally different way? They don't spread it on toast or biscuits....they put it in their congee. So wierd I thought the first time I saw it. Well, not quite as wierd as TD

apparently, they have a new version. iSnack 2.0...obviously trying to copy 'apple' style of branding...anyway, the last time i heard, the response from the public was not good as they felt the name does not suit it well. (im not sure of the taste, but i heard it is easiler to spread on toast)

honestly, i am not a fan of vegimite...basically, it a case where you either love it or hate it...oh well.

td, must report back to you bro...after your post yesterday, when i woke up this morning, headed out to buy some toast...scrounged the fridge and found REAL butter from new zealand...toasted the bread, spread the butter and then the vegemite...that stuff, pretty damn good!  the oil of the butter fits well w/ the vegemite...kinda neutralizes the vegemite a bit so it's not too salty...very good call!  thanks!

yoneyama, using the the vegemite/marmite/brovril in congee is like using fermented tofu (do fu ru, in mando)...

good stuff and good knowledge!

GB,
I won't swallow it at once (now that would be sick ) .... I just suck on it ilike a lollypop when watching a movie.

Yoneyama,
I can't stand Marmite.  Some kids at school used to eat it and just the smell of it made me want to puke.  Still does.  I was a vegemite kid through and through.

viperv10,
vegemite with sao/jatz biscuits are fabulous (you can get Jatz in Taste supermarket)

abcd1234,
Yeah, I have heard that.  Some people have called it: iSuck2.0

Never seen it in a can - always in jars in HK. But yeah it's the best thing to come out of Australia [along with Nutri Grain cereal].

I like to toast fresh wholewheat bread, unsliced, from my local bakery, spread butter and Vegemite and add slices of fresh cheese. Put back under the grill to melt the cheese. Yummy and healthy snack.

Vegemite is also great on untoasted white bread with butter. As someone mentioned, newbies should probably use sparingly at first. I bought some when I was living in England, and gave some to friends from around the world to sample. Reactions ranged from a grudging 'it's ok' to horror. No-one really appreciated it.
