Schooling in Hong Kong

Schools are back and I assume it's compulsary in HK. But my neighbour has a daughter, about 12 or 13, and she never goes to school. Everyday I see her playing with her dog or riding her skateboard or bicycle. Is that unusual? Maybe she's home-schooled. Is that allowed here? Don't want to be a nosy neighbour but I was just wondering.

In HK I believe schooling is mandatory until form 4 ... so if she's about 12 or 13 then her parents are doing it against the law !

your neighbour an expat? daughter may be enrolled in an international school which could
possibly be following a different school calender than the HK public schools?

If the daughter is a HongKong resident then I think she should be in school.

Maybe the mother and daughter are mainland residents

Yes, they're expats but she has a brother, about 15 or 16, and he goes to school every day.

then there can be a few possibilities:

1. She is playing hooky and has not been caught yet.

2. She has played hooky too often and has been expelled from school.

3.  Maybe she is home schooled. But it would be strange if her brother goes to school
     and she stays home.

beyond the usual teenage rebellion phase, does she strike you as a kid with unique problems?

  I was wondering who would be the one to ask that question.   Yes, she's very cute - always wears a singlet and shorts - often short shorts.   She's tomboyish and athletic; amazing what she can do on her skateboard and plays soccer and volley ball with her brother. She seems like a perfectly normal teenager and I just don't understand why she's not in school. Must get lonely all day on her own and I actually feel a little sorry for her. I often give her a nod and a smile on my way out and she smiles back. Yeah, maybe I should stop for a chat.

Due to H1N1 many schools have been closing for a period if their student population is >=10% out sick.
HKIS was closed in Late August, and I believe CDNIS may currently be closed.
if you check, it may be that the program in which she is enrolled is currently affected.

If I'm not mistaken, a kid can drop out at Form 1, which is equivalent to North America's 7th grade, which means she could drop out at 12.  Don't quote me on that though.  I only say that because I was with a provider a few years ago from HK who said that she only went up to Form 1.

Just came home and my neighbour was outside washing his car. I stopped to introduce myself and, while we were chatting, his daughter came out to join us.     OMG, I really think it's time he bought her a bra; I could barely keep my eyes off her budding little titties pushing against her singlet.   Maybe it's my imagination but, oh, she gave me such a wide-eyed look that my heart was pounding and my knees started to shake.
