I had a Japanese friend into it before who said it's like a subculture, you hang out within the same group etc, sort of like Goths or other cliques. Some are incredibly hot. Just sit on a bench near that famous intersection, and you can observe the guys that work in the Fuzuoka industry try to recruit young girls...amazing how many of them are reeled in.
