Anybody here ride a motorcycle in HK? I'll be visiting and am wondering if there's any place in HK that rents bikes. Nothing crazy. Just a 600cc standard or cruiser.

Yes and no.

If you bring your OWN bike, then an international drivers licence is acceptable. £30 at a post office, there was a motorbike adventure a few years ago from Beijing (with special permission from the president of China yes really). Down to HK, then a boat across to Vietnam and back to the UK. Their int licences were good enough.

A pair of Germans did it again in 2006 they smuggled their bikes across from Mongolia rode them down to HK where int driving permits were allowed.

If you want to rent a HK bike you need a HK drivers licence. Apparently the US lic is not stringent enough for the HK licencing system. The UK one is.

Then you can rent a CBF600 or a ZX10R for about 8800HK for three hours. Yes you read that right 8800HK$ for 3 hours. A ZX10R is USELESS in HK, HK simply doesn't have the roads for it. Japan OTOH and the UK.

Bring your own bike? Is that feasible?

I KNOW that bringing in your own car is a hellatious problem where the car has to meet all the Hong Kong requirements before they would licence it.  And I believe that one can NOT run any vehicles in Hong Kong without such licence.  So, I would think that the same applies to motorbikes?

Sure a lot of people have stopped by HK on a RTW motorbike trip. If the bike is there on a temporary basis then there is very little issue. It is when you want it to be permanantly there then there is a big issue.

As said a couple of guys on Yamaha TTR600s (1970s tech!) arrived in HK around 2007. They were Brits with international driving permits

A couple of Germans on XT600E did exactly the same by travelled through China. They were my inspiration for my own motorbike ride. They went through CHina because Korea (my own route) was not open to them. Germany never signed the international driving permit convention.

The thing about China is that it is like Russia. If you get past the border you're scott free.

In that the police tend to think well if you've made it past the border then obviously you have permission to ride it here.


They key word is temporary!

And tbh i think HK has some hang over from British rule. British MOT (maintenance of traffic test) is extremely lax for motorbikes. Emissions for example are not tested, nor is noise or modifications. Thus I can ride my race system on the road no issue. Go to TST on Hanoi road near JSL mansion there is a motorbike park. The park is filled with shitter motorbikes. CB250s with carbs. CB400s CB1s, NC30s and SR250s, pieces of crap. If THEY can be legally ridden.....

Dam that's expensive man. When I was in Hawaii, I wanted to rent a bike but the only place nearby was a harley shop and they wanted to charge me US$150 for 4 hours on a Sportster. That's just stupid and it's a 10th of the price lol..

And as you said, ZX10R is more bike than you'd really need for HK.



I would be happy with an SV650 there. Light and nimble.

That's too bad to hear about the riding limitations. I really wanted to ride HK as I had a great time driving there last time.

During my first year in HK I had the urge to ride a motorcycle or scooter in HK. Not. Knowing my way around I have mailed the HK tourism office.  According to them no motorcycle rental here... Instead they sent a list of multinational car rental companies.. Which ain't cheap either. But then compared to the 8.8k mentioned above...
