VPN problems

I've been having a lot of trouble connecting my VPN service of late.

I used to be able to get connect via Hong Kong and Japan for example quite speedily, now I'm having to go through Canada or the U.S. and then after a dozen attempts.

Went on to a local forum to see if anyone else is having the same trouble and found out that it is the same throughout the mainland. One forum member got the following message from his VPN provider

China has locked down a lot of locations due to their government meetings.. this is affecting ALL vpn companies.. you will have to test various locations and protocols to see what is working for you... it is varying from location to location inside china which ones are working. This should resolve itself once the communist congress stops meeting in a week or so. This is NOT targeted to WiTopia, we are hearing from all providers and they are all having the same issues.

Which VPN service are you using? I use Astril and it seems to be fine.

Would seem to depend on where you are and who's running the great firewall in your location.

In Beijing for example they not only have clamped down hard upon the internet, but have banned pigeons and model planes.

Residents have complained of snail-paced Internet speeds as censors comb though sites to remove subversive content. Beijing police have also banned residents from flying remote control model aircraft. Windows of buses heading toward "political centers" must be closed to prevent the "throwing of leaflets and other issues", according to the influential Caixin magazine.
