I would say that I treat this the same way I would treat a gambling trip.  Never risk more than you are willing to lose.  As Wander says in a previous post, you are way too early in the game for this type of jump in my mind.  So my advice is always the same in this situation, don't risk what you can live with losing, and don't jump in until you know what lies beneath the water.
