Internet Access in HK & CN

Planning a trip at present to HK & CN and looking for a device/service that can deliver me 3G service while travelling to connect into iPhone/iPad. While in the US, I bought a Verison MiFi device from a Best Buy vending machine for around $70 that gave me 5GB of data included, great item & worked well.
Is anything similar available in HK that will also work in CN?

I would think that any android smartphone that can be rooted would serve the purpose.  You should be able to find one on Craigslist pretty cheap if you go for one of the older versions that someone has replaced with a newer version - people everywhere have them stored away in their closet.  A second advantage is that it would serve as a mongering phone - and you have an airtight alibi as to its purpose - your travelling wifi hotspot.

Then in HK and CN you just need to buy a SIM card for it.

I like the alternate mongering phone idea
Yes, I could just bring another iPhone or Android enabled hotspot device, that will certainly work.
So the question becomes, where's the best place to buy a SIM card with a bunch of data, say 5GB, that works in HK & CN? I have asked some of my Chinese associates previously and none have given me a decent answer.

HK that would be fairly easily, as you can buy a prepaid SIM card, which allows unlimited data either by the hour, day or week.

If you want to use that same SIM, HK mobile number in China, that might be a issue as you'd be roaming on data and it can get expensive if you're looking for 5GB worth of roaming data. Would suggest a similar MIFI device, datastick from Chinese Mobile Operator for that specific purpose, I would guess for about 5GB data will run you around 50-100 USD and I believe the datastick is included free but not sure if it can create a hotspot, so MIFI device may be additional cost or possibily your BestBuy could be compatible.

Ok so HK is sorted, do I get the data sim from 7-11 or elsewhere?
Re China, the problem seems to be finding a CN mobile operator that will supply a data sim, some of my associates have tried and got nowhere. Happy to have a second sim and I have a MiFi to plug it into (not the Verison one, binned it when I left the states). Any further ideas to locate a provider in CN?

Yeah 7Eleven should sell a variety of them. I myself picked one up using one2free prepaid and there are one2free stores which I had to go to for tech support in order to get the internet settings set up correctly.

As for China, would suggest China Unicom prepaid. Many vendors sell this as well, again went to someone who actually knew how to configure internet settings.

goto shamshui po the sim cards are cheaper, and exactly the same as those from 7-11, there are many to choose from, you can get roaming cards there, but only included certain amount of data, do check them out before you travel.

Cheap access

For data you will need different cards for CN and HK otherwise the roaming  will be more expensive.

For Hk you can get a 3HK 3G card for about hkd190, with preloaded value, i think of hkd180, there is a month based charge of hkd18 for 30 day which gives you 50mb data and free wifi, data outside of this will be charged a hkd 18 per mb with max of Hkd24 a day for unlimited data. This card can also be used as phone card.

For CN normally data card for specific city gives you 9GB of data for about rmb300 but i have negotiated discounted one to only rmb200 from the local phone or pc stalls。 if you roam outside of the city the limit drops to 2GB. You can also get national cards but at local stalls they are not always stocked, at the official retail outlet you will  have to pay full price.

Hope the above helps.
