I spent 3 days in Bangkok, Thailand recently during my return trip to Hong Kong. This is going to be a multipart report as there are a lot of things I want to share. I've been to Bangkok many years before, but since then many things have changed. I started my first day late. The lineup at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) immigration was long. The time from disembarking from the plane to exiting immigration was just under an hour. And even then there was still a wait for the checked luggage to roll out.

I didn't get into my hotel room until nearly 3 hours after disembarking the plane and at which point it was now late in the evening. I'd read a newbie first night guide saying at Soi Cowboy to check out Crazy House and Bacarra first so that's where I headed.

Upon arriving at Soi Cowboy, I did the standard walk up and down the soi to get my bearings and take everything in. The girls outside each bar are aggressive. They'll call out to you and if you make eye contact they'll turn up the sales pitch. There have been reports of the doormen trying to get guys to pay a cover charge when there isn't one. I didn't face this and was waved in without issue.

Inside, yea many of the girls were topless. I could see why the place is popular. Many of the girls were fairly fit. I saw a couple of girls I liked. One was slim with small B-cup tits but I could never see her number. The other had C-cup tits but I think a guy must've gotten her as she quickly disappeared and I didn't see her again until the next night. Which sort of turned out to be a good thing for me. When I got into Crazy House, I just took whatever seat they pointed out which was right beside the entrance/exit. The bar is setup such that every seat gives good views. It wasn't until later when I took a walk around the bar that I realized more empty seats were available. On my second visit I choose a seat on the right side from when you walk in. That was the side I saw the slim girl dancing and was hoping that I might spot her again.

I don't remember if drinks -- most drinks regardless -- were 160 or 180 baht. It seemed to be on the higher end in terms of pricing. My second time back here I gave 200 baht for a Coca Cola (which I think was 160 baht) and told my waitress to keep the change. 1.) I had no idea how much I should be tipping; and 2.) I didn't want to bother with getting change, likely in coins, back. To my surprise, this waitress on her own accord then became my personal attendant. I don't know for certain, but I guessed that this was related to the tip amount. For the entire time I was there she would point out girls to me, bring over girls to my seat and ask if I was interested and throw me a smile when I looked in her direction. I didn't end up choosing any girls, but it was definitely helpful to have her there. I have no idea if this is normal for the wait staff at Crazy House or not.

Suvarnabhumi Airport / Bangkok International Airport / BKK

I flew into BKK with Thai Airways as they're part of Star Alliance and I can accumulate points with my usual local carrier. This was a short 2.5 hour flight from HKG. Lunch meal (curry pork and rice) was even included in this short flight which wouldn't happen at all with the North American carriers which I'm used to. Touchdown to reaching the gate was an easy 10 minutes. Disembarking and walking towards the immigration counters was easy as the signs were clear and people kept a good pace on the moving escalators. This was mid afternoon at 4 PM. Little would I actually know though.

Upon reaching the immigration counters, the lines were... long. There were signs saying that it was a 45 minute wait and this was accurate. In hindsight this should've been obvious. Midday tends to be the favourite flight arrival time anywhere and the flight I was on reflected this in being completely full. So while I was waiting in line I got online with my iPhone (I already had roaming data plan). Got on Tinder to see what matches I could get. Got on Smooci to see which escorts were available later. After having my passport stamped, I still had to wait for my checked luggage to come out. Definitely not one of the more efficient major airports out there.

Finally with my luggage in hand I exited and headed towards the basement level where the foreign currency exchange counters are and the Airport Rail Link station. I chose the recommended SuperRich forex booth as they had the best rates for USD to THB. I can't speak for HKD to THB as I have a USD account I use specifically for travel. Many others had also seen the rates as the SuperRich booth was the only one with a line and it was long. I ended up spending close to 30 minutes in line. Forex requires your passport so have that ready. Depending on your currency, you get a better rate if your cash denominations are higher. When I was there, SuperRich gave 33.20 THB for 1 USD (for $100 denominations, or 33.15 THB for $50 denominations and less for $20 denominations of USD) -- which was actually the market rate when I did a live check on XE.com.

Money taken care of, I headed over to the Airport Rail Link machines to purchase my token. The ARL, BTS and MRT are easy to use when buying a token or ticket. On the touchscreen you select English, then your destination, and then just insert payment via cash or coins. A token (for ARL and MRT) or ticket (BTS) will dispense and you collect your change. Upon entry to the gates, you tap your token or insert your ticket (and collect your ticket back) and then walk through the gates. Upon exit you insert your token or ticket at the gate and then walk through. It was about a 15 minute wait for the Airport Rail Link. There's no express line anymore and it's about 30 minutes into the city to Praya Thai BTS. I was looking to get to Asok so I had the option of switching to either the BTS or MRT. I chose the MRT as Google Maps said it would be faster so I got off at Makkasan, walked to Phetchaburi MRT and down one stop to Sukhumvit MRT. The cost was 60 baht compared to taking a taxi which would've been 400 baht and the same amount of time. However, traffic, crowds and the fact that I still had to walk from Asok to my hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 22 made the commute over an hour long.

Later when I was leaving I went the BTS route at Phraya Thai to the airport and this way was easier. The walking distance from Phraya Thai BTS to Phraya Thai ARL is much shorter and easier than the Makkasan ARL to Phetchaburi MRT route.

The lines at BKK security check were also long when I was leaving. Arriving 2 hours before flight time actually made sense at this airport. BKK was very serious about security. Belts off. Shoes off. Computers and tablets out of their cases. I saw some people being photographed at the exit and passport check though I wasn't. Though I did get to the airport 2 hours early, it took over an hour before I got past all the security and exit checks. By this time I had about 30 minutes before boarding at the gate began.

I've never found any airport to have good prices at their shops. Does anyone ever actually find any shopping deals at airports? I've transited through BKK before and don't think there's much to look at here. I got myself a latte and headed towards my gate.

Overall thoughts: The lines at BKK are long. In the future I may chose either an early morning or late night arrival if it'll avoid the crowds. A lot of time was wasted at the airport. Taking the ARL instead of a taxi or Uber saved me over 300 THB.

1. As you noted, the midday flights can cause a logjam at immigration and baggage claim. On my last flight HKG-BKK (also on TG), I took an early morning 0745 flight which arrived at 0925 and there were only two people per line and it was less than a 5 minute wait. So in the future, the pain of getting up at 5am offsets the dreadful 1 hour wait at immigration.


2. As for SuperRich, I also saw the long line on the basement level at BKK. However, directly behind the SuperRich booth is the red "Value+" booth which had no line and was actually a few US cents better than SuperRich.

Going to talk about some of the mall food courts in this post. Everyone needs to eat! Budgets listed includes a main and drink.

CentralWorld (outdoor market), between Chit Lom BTS and Siam BTS

My favourite food court. A lot of variety because CentralWorld outdoors has more physical space to work with. A lot of food is precooked and set out for you to see so you're not looking at just pictures of menus. The outdoor market isn't dedicated to just food so there's also clothes, crafts and etc. Everything is paid with cash. This market gets featured in a lot of travel videos because a lot of events happen here. Budget: 300-400 baht.

CentralWorld is nearly equal distance between Chit Lom BTS or Siam BTS. It's a healthy walk whichever BTS station you're coming from. The mall itself was undergoing renovations when I was there (July 2017) and a lot of stores were closed. The two anchor department stores, Zen and Isetan, were open though.


Emporium, Phrom Phong BTS

This is my second favourite food court. I never saw it busy or crowded and there are plenty of seats. Like many other food courts in Bangkok, this one uses the prepaid card system where you exchange cash for a prepaid card which you then use to spend in the food court. At the end you return your card (on the same day else I think you lose your remaining balance on it) to the same counter and get back in cash whatever the remaining balance is.

Emporium has some dishes which I haven't seen in other food courts like fish cake and tandoori chicken. The downside is that it's a rather long walk if you're coming from Phrom Phong BTS as they're on opposite sides of the mall and the food court is on the top floor. There are elevators and escalators by the Sukhumvit Soi 24 entrance. Budget: 150-250 baht.


Terminal 21, Asok BTS

This is the current local and tourist favourite. The location is really convenient. There are even two food courts. One in the basement using cash and which also has a number of restaurants. The other on the top floor, branded as Pier 21, and using the prepaid card system. The top floor also has several chain restaurants outside the food court.

There are a lot of noodle dishes found on the top floor. It's also really crowded and thus can be difficult to get a seat. Budget: 150-250 baht.


Siam Paragon, Siam BTS

One of the better looking food courts. Also more expensive. It's in Siam Paragon, an upscale luxury mall so what do you expect right? There are a few chain restaurants here which I didn't see at other malls. Good mall to eyeball hotties. Budget: 300-500 baht.


Eatigo

This isn't an ad, but I like them. Eatigo is a Bangkok-based startup who's been around since 2015 that offers discounts on restaurants. Sort of like Groupon but with an easier to use site. I used the site to search for seafood buffet deals. What you can do though is use Eatigo to find whatever restaurant deal you're looking for, then go to that restaurant/hotel's site and see if they offer the same deal directly. This was actually the case with many hotel buffet deals when I was searching.

Kasalong, Nana BTS | A blowjob bar

Blowjob bars are one of those things about Bangkok that you absolutely have to try. The name describes itself. It's a bar where you go in to get a blowjob. Overall thoughts: TF seems good if you live in Thailand. It doesn't seem to be time efficient if you're in Thailand for less than a week. Be aware of the automatically recurring billing.


Tinder

Sad to say, the girls I was getting on Tinder were as unattractive as the girls I see at home. Blergh! Met a civilian but it's an embarrassing story with much regret.

I must admit I started on Thai Friendly way to early last trip and girls did lose interest. Dr A is correct saying there are a lot of time wasters out there hoping to jerk off to some photos etc.

I am in Bangkok in four weeks time and have decided not to use Thai Friendly this trip. I am meeting a girl who I met on Thai Friendly and travelling with her for a few days. More a tourist guide with no sex expected.
