IS IT SAFE TO STAY IN A HOSTEL IN TST..

RICO will be back in HK in three weeks time but am taking a newbie who has NEVER been to HK...

The question i ask is .. Has any bros stayed in a hostel in TST before and is it safe... Recommendations...

He is on a tight budget and RICO has offered to pay for his meals and stay at the same hotel as himself but he has taken me up on the offer of freebie meals but wants to stay in a hostel inTST...

Should i be worried for him or just go with the flow.......

It's certainly safe to stay at the hostels in TST.
I've stayed in hostel everytime i visited HK except for once since i'm with a group.

Just last Sept 2012 i stayed at the Mirador Mansion along Nathan Road TST.
Rooms uses electronic keys.

Last 2011 i stayed at the Tourists House also at TST.

Well if it is a private room those are guest houses and not really hostels.

Hostels are where you have dorms. Dorms just be wary and sleep with your wallet under your pillow. Dorms are v cheap though HK can get you a dorm bed for $40 a night.

A private guest house room ensuite typically is $130-$200 a night.

A WG will NEVER go home with you nor will a bar girl or even street girls.

Also Chungking and Mirador have guards that ask for ID after midnight.

Chungking you don't want to travel in the stairwells past midnight

Just people being sick and people hanging around for no reason, not been attacked or anything though.

Life is short very...

I can't think of any place that is not safe in HK ... but using common sense in locking up valueables is a must as in anywhere in the world

It is safe in the general sense almost everywhere in HK.  Certainly you need to keep your property well.

How much is that tourist house? Damn it looks big enough to sleep a family of 4.  Hotels have been getting so expensive as of late, and I usually stay 2-3 weeks which comes down to about 2000 USD, would rather save it for punting.

Try Airbnb or wimdu, I stayed in Sun Kai Mansion in Wanchai over Christmas and have booked a smaller room for 19 nights in May for HK$7000 100m walk to Neptune 3 leaving plenty of moey for punting compared to a hotel room on in Wan Chai

Try www.hostels.com/hong-kong/hong-kong, they have hundreds of cheap hostels. Try to pick the best rating ones, most of them are in the range of $200 to $300.

It's about 350-400 HK$ a night. Actually Tourists House has better ambiance and much much cozy compared to that at Mirador Mansion.
The lift at the Tourist House isnt as busy as that of the Mirador becoz of its enormous amount of tenants and tourists.
The only advantage of the hostels at Mirador is its location since its along Nathan Road where many shopping stores are located while Tourists House is located along Mody Road much deeper inside near Chatham Road so a longer walk goin to Nathan Road.
