Just got back from a quick trip to Kunming. Dropped by the Lingping Hotel on Guangfu Lu the Wednesday night about 8:00pm, only to find the 3rd floor had been closed down by the police again. There was a girl behind the desk and 4 or 5 guys hanging around playing cards and eating sunflower seeds. Otherwise no signs of life when the receptionist told me that there was no one available.

May have something to do with the terrorist massacre at the train station a few days earlier, although how closing down brothels effects terrorists is a mystery to me. I suppose rounding up the usual suspects enables them to look like they are doing something under the sudden scrutiny from Beijing.

Kunming seems to have overnight sprouted an army of police in bullet proof vests on every street corner. There were even 6 man squads of armed army personnel marching around the airport when I went to catch my plane home.

I would expect that once the kerfuffle has died down things will return to normal, unfortunately not before I had to leave Kunming.
