Just a quick observation. I was involved, in a very small way, of the attempted conversion of LV to a "family' resort area. It was a dismal failure! Hence, the "what happens in Vegas stay ...
I realize this is not a thread about Las Vegas, but a few more words to add to what mrclen wrote. Las Vegas, as far back as the mid-late 1970s was watching a disturbing trend in their clientel. The deep pocket 'high roller' gamblers were not going to LV in the great numbers as they were in the 50's and 60's. Rather they were heading up to S. Lake Tahoe and enriching those casinos liberally. Actually there was quiet talk about a less than desireable crowd which were the regulars in LV and dragging down the general quality of the Vegas experience.
Also Atlantic City had just opened casino style gambling and that was taking away more $$$ from the LV casinos.
The revitalization of LV was actually a multi-faceted approach to do whatever it took to get anyone, even families with kids, to go back to LV and spend their money. As mrclen wrote, LV is not a family resort experience. Rather they have embraced a more general approach to not be seen as only gambling or carnal pursuits. Need proof ? Roller coasters at New York New York and the Stratosphere (coaster is closed now); Ferris wheel of gigantic proportions on the strip; high end shopping experience to rival any destination at Wynn's and other hotels; shoot a real machine gun, no pproblem at many legal gun ranges; and etc. etc.
IF - - Macau begins a metamorphosis into something new, it will be interesting to see what happens. I have not yet been there. I am still stuck in the 60's when Macau produced all the firecrackers we had here in the States.
