A suspected prostitute from mainland China was chopped to death in the early hours of this morning in a Hong Kong flat that was allegedly used as a one-woman brothel.

The murder of the 45-year-old woman was discovered in a second floor flat in Reclamation Street, Yau Ma Tei at about 3.45am.

“A woman heard her screaming and went to check. She found a man running out from the flat,” a police source said.

“The victim suffered chop wounds and was found unconscious inside the flat.”

Police were called and officers arrested a 20-year-old man in Kwun Tong in connection with the brutal killing several hours later.

He was being held for questioning and had not been charged.

The victim was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital where she was later declared dead.

She was the holder of a two-way permit, permitting travel from the mainland to Hong Kong and Macau.

The woman who found the body is a friend of the victim and also from the mainland.

It is understood she alerted a brothel-keeper who called police.

Detectives from Yau Tsim police district are investigating.

Police figures show there were 11 reports of homicide in the first six months of this year, a 15 per cent drop from 13 cases in the same period last year.
