From the reactions to one of my post, it would seem a little history is in order on the Internet Sex databases from their inception. Having Mongered the World since the late 80’s I have pretty much been there done that. In the pre-internet era you obtained your information by word of mouth, or Hotel staff, or Taxi drivers or printed media in the city you were in. It was impossible to plan ahead.
Enter the Internet era and the forum. Finally, a way that fellow mongers from around the world, could communicate with each other on a quasi real time bases. A man named Jackson from Argentina and his International Sex Forum achieved this vehicle in the mid 90’s. Fire up your dial-up connection and check out what action other mongers are getting and more importantly where to go.
The century turns and with it comes the age of high speed Internet. Now, no more need for forums as high-speed databases are become realistic. On March 5, 2002 Mr. Cheung & Mr. Chen established a company known as KCMC Limited Company and used the name of the company to rent server space on the Hong Kong Internet Service Provider Newsbook Limited. They hired a web developer and using Tomcat Apache Software, launched the website
www.sex141.com. This website is a sex directory for Hong Kong, in which girls are listed by district, apartment building, street addresses, age, physical measurement, service ratings and fees.
A 19-year-old Fujian resident named Wang Rong founded 99bbs.com in 2002. The web servers for the website are located in the United States, and therefore beyond the reach of Chinese law enforcement. The web site may have begun as a general interest forum, but in 2003 it began to distribute pornographic movies, pictures and articles. At first, 99bbs.com was a free site. In April 2004, Wang Rong decided to switch some sections to a paid subscription basis. One of the paid sections contained pornographic movies, pictures and articles; another paid section was a directory of brothels all over China, including addresses, prices and reviews. As a whole, the web site has more than 300,000 registered users who logged more than 400 million hits. As of 5 pm on November 15, 2004, the computer records show that the pornographic section had 75,772 registered users. It had 42,705 pornographic pictures which had been viewed a total of 32,734,600 times; there were 4,784 pornographic articles, which had been viewed a total of 24,340,060 times; there were 4,094 pornographic movies, which had been viewed 1,900,525 times. The brothel directory section had 47,452 registered users, with 207 web pages, which had been viewed 252,731 times. Rong is in the U.S. and there is an International Police warrant on him for violation of intellectual property rights, something I think everyone has done once or twice in their lifetime. Apparently in China you can sell pussy but its against the law to look at it, that's pornography. So if you hire an actress to have sex in a movie isn't she really a prostitute. Sex for money.
A rival Hong Kong site, 161sex first registered on May 26th 2003 with World Wide Web, Internet, Bermuda and had there site up and running on June 7th 2003. The site became popular very quickly as the spreadsheets within the database allowed for various search links as to information contained in the database such as services offered by providers.
On September 8th 2003 the police arrested Mr. Cheung but sex141 continued operations unabated. On June 13th 2004 161sex published its last web update and did not publish another web page until January 18th 2006 even though their web server was in Bermuda and therefore beyond the reach of Chinese law enforcement.
By shutting down for 18 moths they lost considerable market share never to gain it back. On Apr 26, 2007 the website scaled back their database search capabilities no longer offering specific searches on the services provided by its clients. One redeeming aspect of the website is that they still incorporate into there database a the search for the languages that the service provider speaks

As a country, China has the second largest number of Internet users. When Chinese people get on the Internet, most of them are not banging the keyboard to talk about freedom or democracy. Similarly, as a country, the United States has the largest number of Internet users and most Americans do not get on the Internet to talk about the privatization of social security or the nomination of John Bolton as US Ambassador to the United Nations. The common thing about the United States and China is that the most popular subject on the Internet is ... pornography.
Really looking forward to my next assignment in China.
