My own observation is it's very individual. Some girls have huge cramps every time, some don't. Some girls have side-effects from the pill, some don't. etc ...
Sounds like you might be one of the lucky ones. Certainly, fluid exchange aside, there's nothing dirty or unhygienic about blood. Some of the more immature guys might freak out, but the majority aren't bothered and don't worry about it. In fact, I read an account by a guy who was taught by his first (and older older) girlfriend to eat her out during her period - a skill that made him much in demand with his subsequent girlfriends!
At the other extreme I had a GF once who was very religious and abstained for a long time as a teenager, but nonetheless was on the pill early on because it gave her relief from the cramps. Her doctor didn't believe her when she said she wasn't sexually active ...
