The word comes from the Tokugawa Shogunate , where the government legalized brothels, bathhouses, restaurants, etc. where one could get their rocks off either by drinking or via sexual release.  Since drinking, bathing, and having sex all could be defined as "liquid" the Japanese nicknamed it the "water trade." That term has stuck and basically, mizushoubai is a broad word to denote hostess bars, snack bars, cabaret, etc. where you pay top money to pretty women to listen to you talk.

#11 Post at 30-8-2009 17:55  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L that's fukked up... here in San Francisco, there's a lot of girls who advertise as Japanese who are either Korean or Taiwanese as well.  In fact I would say 9 out of 10 who advertise as Japanese are not Japanese.  To complicate things further, there are ABJs (American Born Japanese) who advertise as Japanese, but that defeats the point of things, since an American-born Whatever has American attitudes and thus considered American and not Asian. I guess it's the same advertising appeal in HK as it is here in the U.S. - the appeal to all the Japanese porno watchers....

The confirmation was received when I started speaking Japanese to the girl and then spoke Korean to her.  She quickly opened up after I called her on being Korean. But does it really matter?  I actually think KGs are prettier than JGs.
