Mandarin certainly has all the sex-related vocab mentioned so far in this thread. And asia-play is quite right: best to learn the Mandarin terms. Not only do most of the HK/Macau Chinese WGs come from non-Cantonese speaking parts of China, but Mandarin is the language of the future; even HK people are flocking to Mandarin classes. There is absolutely no reason to learn Cantonese. Sorry if I've offended any of the local bros, but it's the truth.

Well this was for sex term, not which language is better.  Hence the title CHINESE (not cantonese or mandarin)  Like I said those were the terms I know and seen used on this board.

the "correct" slang term for anal is 後 花 園 or literally, "back garden". In Cantonese, "hauh fa yuen".  Warning though, most guys would know the term but many girls probably won't unless they're well versed at Cantonese.  It would be like being in an English-speaking country and asking a girl if she does "Greek".  Yeah, if she's a pro, she'll know what the john is asking but if she doesn't know English that well, the term would go over her head.

Language is a tool for communication, so of course it's all about "which language is better". Why learn the Cantonese terms for these acts if very few of the WGs are going to understand you? (I have yet to come across a HG here in HK, for instance, who understands any Cantonese at all.) I assume it is WGs you want to be able to use these terms with. If you only want to communicate with other "readers and punters" then why not just use English. Hai capito? わかりました?

WGs aside, if you live in HK, surely it's better to learn Cantonese, rather than Mandarin. A lot of locals don't speak Mandarin and we're all going to spend a lot more time with locals than we are with WGs from the mainland. I can work in HK but I doubt I'll ever be able to work on the mainland. As for ..."Mandarin is the language of the future" - I very much doubt it.

You're correct. If you're going to spend the rest of your time in Asia living in HK and speaking only with the locals, than perhaps learning Cantonese would be the better option. (Tho bear in mind that HKers seem to have no tolerance for Guailos speaking imperfect Cantonese.) In that case these Cantonese sex terms would come in handy chatting with colleagues at work, in-laws, etc.

By language of the future I meant that Mandarin will, already has in fact, supplant all the other dialects of Chinese as the preferred language of communication and culture for the Chinese people. The locals, esp the older ones, might still be attached to the idea of a superior HK surrounded by a sea of unwashed peasants, but the world is rapidly changing. When I first started visiting HK in the early 80's, no one here spoke Mandarin; now everyone is falling over themselves to get up to speed in the national dialect.

I'm sure English will be the top dog for a long time to come, but Mandarin will definitely become one of the important future world languages. American High Schools are already emphasizing Mandarin.

Believe me, if you plan to spend a lot of time in Asia, and if you're young enough to be around for a few more decades, you will regret not learning Mandarin.

Australian but higher-education in England. Can I ask one thing - which is easier? I've heard Mandarin is easier than Cantonese.

I only speak Mandarin and know very little about Cantonese. However, I have been told that Cantonese is, in fact, more difficult than Mandarin. Mandarin has 4 tones, for instance, whereas Cantonese has 6, 8, or 9 depending on how the tones are classified.

Cantonese is spoken by 70 million or so Chinese (that includes the province of Guangdong) whereas all of the Chinese people speak Mandarin to some extent or other. Northern Chinese - and that includes those luscious NE Chinese girls!! - speak only Mandarin. Another thing to bear in mind is that the Chinese diaspora - Taiwan, Singapore, and all the European and US Chinese communities are now predominantly Mandarin speakers.

A comparison I like to make is to that of someone moving to Sicily; he could learn only the Sicilian dialect, but that would be so much more limiting than learning the standard Italian that is understood everywhere in Italy. (Yes, that is not perfect analogy in that Cantonese is a much more viable as a stand-alone community.)

The only reason HK, out of all the important Chinese communities, has a relatively low level of Mandarin comprehension is due to it's history as a wealthy, isolated Brit colony vastly more affluent than the surrounding Mainland. That artificial situation has now ended, and as HK becomes increasingly incorporated into the larger, expanding Chinese economic and cultural sphere, competence in Mandarin in HK will eventually rise to national standards. Just in the last 10 years, it's much easier to use Mandarin in HK, esp with the younger people.

Due yourself a favor, if you're going to learn only one Chinese dialect, learn Mandarin.
