I only speak English, thinking maybe it's better for walk up but not sure, anyone have an opinion?

From my experience,many of the phone reservation girls have pimps who do not speak any English.  So when you contact them by phone, of course, you are unable to ascertain any details such as address and time. Many of the Hotel Reservation Girls do have English speaking pimps, however, it is sometimes difficult to understand their instructions about hotel location. It is often a good idea to have them provide hotel phone number and then phone hotel to get directions.

On the other hand, although there are a few Walk-ups who do speak English, most do not. Fortunately this is not an issue. When you arrive at their door, there is little doubt as to the reason you are there.

I'm still pretty new, but in my experience the walk-up is no problem for an english-only speaker.  If you want to do Hotel Reservation girls and can't communicate verbally on the phone, try texting your appointment request, that's worked for me so far.  It's easier to decipher a written request in english than to comprehend and speak it.

is there a difference between phone reservation and hotel reservations.  I see that sometimes both are listed?

But is this a difference that matters?  With phone reservations is it still always an incall to wherever the girl is?  Or is it a situation where she will only come to where you are?

I started with the walkup scene.  Piece of cake!   The buildings can be pretty scruffy, but the girls are sweet.  Remind yourself to say "no" to anything you DO
N'T like!   I know that sounds obvious, but if you're a newbie, and you're accosted by a sweet talking over-the-hill WG wearing too much lingerie, you just might allow yourself to be dragged into her lair before realizing your mistake.  The girls don't mind if you say no, they will keep trying to lure you in, but they see a lot of guys that just come looking so it's no big deal if you want to walk all the floors in a building before coming back to your first choice.

No confusion about price, then?  I read somewhere that walk-ups advertised price may be massage-only, and FS is more, and they'll tell you if that's the case - but that sounds tricky for someone like me who only speaks English...

Typically unless it specifies on the web site that it for massage only, the price is for full service. If you are concerned you won't be able to understand the price, I bet some universal hand signals and a calculator will clear up much of the  confusion about what you are expected to pay. I speak only English and have never had a problem communicating with the WG about service and price. Unless you have some fairly unusual demands of the girl, I don't think you will have a problem.

I would agree with that assessment generally.  While it may be more common to find the pretty girls working Hotel Reservation (maybe because the managers are a screen), there are also pretty girls with very good attitudes in the walkup scene.  And with walkups, if you don't like what you see you can always check out the other girls on the floor, and the floor above that, and the floor above that    With a Hotel Reservation girl, if you don't like what you see then you've got another booking process to go through and another hour or so to kill.

Guys who know the HR system and papasans better seem to be able to arrange a virtual lineup sometimes, and that would obviously improve your selection.  I don't know if such a thing would be available to a non-canto speaking first timer.

For a first time, bust-a-cherry thing, go with a walkup.  Maybe stick to the ones advertised here so you eliminate any chance of price confusion.  It's easy.

If a WG only knows 10 words of English, you can probably guess what most of them will be!        It's a simple survival thing...

As a pretty much English only speaker, I started with walkups, and I've never been disappointed, most of the girls I visited had some sort of sign with how much things were. any confusion was quickly sorted out and I always left happy.

I did try calling a papasan but he and I really didn't communicate that well, and the last I heard from him was 'call you back!' which never happened...
