divorce is not an option because the kid needs two parents and I'd get reamed on my assets.
JeSun, we should really talk. I was once where you are now. I stuck it out for 11 more, miserable years. In the end, my kids lost all respect for me, and I got reamed on my assets anyway. And I lost 11 years of my life... 11 years that I will never get back. Yes, kids need two parents. But they still have two parents after a divorce. We all deserve the opportunity to be happy...

I (like most Asian parents) want my kid to head to Stanford or Harvard or some school like that. He has shown so far (he's got another 7 years before college) that he's not a top tier student (goes to one of the finest public schools in all of California), probably in the next tier.
Been there, done that... Actually, we westerners don't have quite the same attitudes, so my comments may not apply. I told my kids from day one that they could go wherever they wanted to go and do whatever they wanted to do. But I also raised them to know that they would only get in life what they create. They knew that I would pay for college, but after that they were on their own... and if they chose to become a starving artist, I would love them, but let them suffer. I am lucky. They all did well and went to Ivy League schools. But second tier is not so bad, if they are happy...
Have fun, CGP
