You are distorting my position. I 've never said HK was a police state. I have nothing whatsoever against HK. My post was about Chinese attitudes towards Tibet. Where does Falun Gong come into it? There may even be pro-Tibet orgs here in HK, I don't know.

But given the problems when the Olympic torch was carried in London and Paris - seeing how much face was lost -  the HK authorities were hyper-sensitive about embarrassing China when the torch was here. If you want, believe that the police were only motivated by a desire to secure the girl's safety - that's not how it looked to me, but then I wasn't there.

You don't care because you're safely living in the USA. Those of us who intend to spend the rest of our lives in HK care because,
sometime in the future, we may be on the receiving end of what is happening in Tibet. And if you upset the CCP, nothing and
no one can protect you - forget about the rule of law that exists in developed countries. And one thing is now sure - our first
elected CEO, assuming we actually get one, will be a lap-dog of Beijing.

But eventually, China will collapse in the same way that the Soviet Union did. And all those MBAs learning Mandarin are wasting
their time - unless it's for the WGs of course.

China will not "collapse"...they will slowly evolve into a freer nation.  It is already happening.  Mainland China is far freer today than it was ten years ago.   Hong Kong will not become like China.  Rather, China will become like Hong Kong.

If the CCP wanted a dictatorship in HK, they already had ten years to do it.  Nothing has happened because China needs HK to say the same.  HK's free and Westernized social/economic system helps draw massive foreign investment...investment needed to fuel China's economic rise.  The CCP allows Hong Kong to retain it's freedoms because it is in the CCP's own self-interest.

China does not need Tibet for its economic rise.  So CCP is free to suppress Tibetians all they want.

Besides, let me put this into perspective.  The Olympic flame went through a city of 7,000,000 Hong Kongers -- and there was only 1 incident.  Far more people get arrested and detained in London, Paris and San Francisco!!

I sincerely hope that's true.  It would certainly make the Taiwan problem easier to solve. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine the CCP ever voluntarily giving up absolute power. In many ways, going from communism to democracy will be far more difficult and revolutionary than was the transition from the imperial system to communism.

Tho certainly China in some form or another will always be with us.

It'll never happen. The CPP will NEVER change voluntarily. One-man-one vote in China? - impossible as
long as the CPP has the power. So just how will this 'freedom' evolve?

Exactly right - but just what kind of freedom is that? Either you're free or you're not free. And when you
have to rely on others for your freedom, then you're not free at all.

Are you sure the CCP will never change voluntary?  Leaders in China die all the time, replaced by younger people who are more enlightened.

I know it's popular to bash China.  But let's be real.  China is a freer place today than it was ten years ago, at least in major cities.   Perhaps it's still repressive as fuck in remote locations like Tibet.  But life has improved for most mainland Chinese in both economic and social freedoms.

There isn't this stiff "free" or "no free" standard.  There are degrees of freedom.  Some countries have very free rights to speak, like America.  Others are slighly less free, like Europe.

None of us will live long enough to see China having one-man-one-vote.  But that doesn't mean they will instigate repression in Hong Kong.  They've already had ten years to do it if they wanted to.  A lot of CCP members are corrupt and have business interests in HK.  They will not want to fuck with HK's recipe for success out of self-interest.  They also know that HK bring massive foreign investments to promote China's economic growth.  That's why they have left HK alone.  Even the HK Democratic Party will admit that life in HK is still as free as it was during British rule.

I cannot name a single freedom I've lost in HK since 1997.  Can you?

How do you see that Europe is slightly less free than the US, bro?

Because in France and Germany, you can go to jail for insulting the President or denying the Holocaust.

In America, you're free to talk shit about Bush all day and denying anything.

By the way, when I said "free", I was only talking about freedom of speech.

You might want to hang around University cafes drinking po cha and reading the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

People keep saying that other countries beg to do business with China. Because they think China IS unsophisticated, and they can just make money off them. I keep hearing this saying, "1.1 billion people, I just need to make one dollar off every person"...

Well, we can't all just sit here and watch as Hong Kong becomes China, can we? We have a special, unique identity that we need to protect. We aren't Chinese, and we aren't British either, we are, Hong Kong, that's what we are. Fuck everyone else.

People say, "Hong Kong won't live if China cuts it off". True. But they want our money too. And I bet all those mainlanders down here wouldn't be too happy if they were all forced to go home forever.

Freedom of expression is precious. Nowhever else in China can you say what you can say here. Yeah, Christina might not be fully informed, but surely, its encouraging to see the younger generation interested in politics, than the sludge they feed us on telly?

One man, one vote?

I'm confused with all this political talk. People keep telling me that there are very few countries that have genuine
one-man-one-vote because they have electoral colleges (whatever that is) and all sorts of barriers between the man in the street and the actual top guy being voted on. Just look at what happened in the Gore-Bush election and the current
race for super-delegates. How does that differ from what we have here in HK? Can someone explain?
Also my local friends keep complaining that they have to have a police permit to stage a rally here, but isn't that pretty much true for every country?
I'm just an engineer who works with industrial machinery and I've never really studied politics or political systems, but this nubile young protester is so HOT that I want to study up on this stuff just in case I meet her and have to carry on a conversation before I get into her knickers.

Well said bro.    If I was born a Hongkonger, I'd feel the same way. Why should China swallow up Hong Kong?
From an outsider's perspective, Hong Kong and China are not even remotely similar and the people are totally different.

Same with Taiwan; why should China rule everybody they see as being of Chinese race. Large parts of Europe are racially
similar but no one suggests they should be one-country. As for Tibet - hell, they're not even Chinese.

And Christina Chan? I say go girl!    And the fact that she's a total babe makes it that much better.
