Rent = Tax

Just remember, once you get here, cost of living in general can be very low, unless you like to eat out at Western Style Restaurants a lot, but, your rent, or if you buy property, get ready to pay through the nose for something very very small compared to what you are used to in the US.  The one way to look beyond that is to think of the fact that your taxes here are going to be like way less then the US so it kind of balances out.  Rent = Tax.

... Rent = Tax ...

Totally true.  Hong Kong property prices are definitely a very smart way to tax the population ... the government gets the money up-front as a lump sum plus a residual trickle from stamp duties ... but at least it leaves the taxpayer deciding how much he's willing to pay.  Want to live in a bigger place than the next guy?  Nicer view?  Swimming pool?  No problem, just pay more: seems fair enough to me!

The difference being if you buy in HK, the formula is Extortionate Mortgage = Tax which you can sell to someone else in the future.

Buy the rights to physical land (or something that stands on it) and you do at least retain a measure of control.  And in most places population growth and inflation are in your favour long term so you're assured to get your money back.  Pay to the government (any government) and you lose any hope of getting a return on the money ...

Rant over ... thanks ... at least I enjoyed it!!

Yes but like for like its STILL cheaper,

Any of you have stayed in one of the guest houses in Kowloon like Chungking or Mirador Mansions you will notice the rooms are cheap $110 a night (without haggling and not going to the cheapest place).

The beds are narrow but you get TV , aircon , and ensuite for $110 a night $200 for a double.

I lived in a London flat which was about the same size and paid close to £800 a month for it
$12240 AND had to pay the heavy UK taxes AND pay 17000HKD council tax a year.

Life is short very...

If you are UK trained and registered then your acceptance here has a better chance.
Look up the HK medical council and see their requirements ...

I suspect you may be disappointed ...

I know a guy who works for an insurance company doing medical evacuations, mostly from China.  He flies to wherever the patient is, and then sits next to them as they fly back, and that's pretty much all he's allowed to do here.  He told me the reason he does this is that he wants to live in Hong Kong but can't be bothered to repeat the Hospital training at a hospital - my understanding is that even though he's a fully qualified medical Doctor he would still have to do those notorious 115-hour-weeks as a house locum for a couple of years, and that's enough to stop him.

Bottom line, expect to find some obstacles as you do your research, but u may be able to find a niche where you can make a living anyway if you try hard enough.

Good luck - where there's a will there's a way - but you will probably have to think and search outside the box!

Bro, since you're in radiology, do ya think they'll ever invent X-Ray glasses so that we can look
through gals' clothes? Or have they done it already and you guys are keeping it secret?
