Job seeking in HK?

I've been away for a bit... but since the UK economy has gone to shit or more so, and there is talk of redundancies or even pay cuts   in the office I might just move my 2010 move to 2009.

, my question is this how do you find a job in HK? ,

I hear that most of the jobs posted in the papers and online are often just jobs that are going through the motions , or to satisfy some sort of bureucractic BS.... when the job has actually already been filled or the job doesn't exist.....

I've read musings about being introduced and or head hunted , since my family there all work manual jobs or very low level office jobs this is no help and I'm not some kind of elite employee enough to be headhunted in all probability...

have to do some sort of planning IF I decide to swoop in on HK mid September, either that or go sky diving ..... unless the tower in Macau lets you jump off it?

Any thoughts?

Ta

Many of the job postings are "just going through the motions" but not all.  The attention getters are:  a Western education (a namebrand school helps a lot), speak Cantonese, Mandarin and English, have finance/banking experience.

And you CAN jump off the Macau tower, I've done it--big bunge jump.....scared the sh't out of me.  Good luck.

but if u want the very best deal your best bet is to find a company outside HK that's hiring to set up or expand their HK office.  Takes more effort, but worth the trouble.  Head Office budgets beat local budgets by miles and you really want housing to be paid by the company.

what is your profession? and what sort of job you are looking for in H.K?

I got to say it again, since you're native speaker, the easiest is to be english teacher. At least you can have an income and try to look for other job while you teach.

Bah had a look around and job ads seem to be taking the piss 5-10 years experience for 18-25K HKD a month , that must be a joke since I make more than that in the UK (pre tax) , looks like I might go live in Germany for a bit again.

Nah I just consider it way TOO big a pay cut , even when lower taxes are taken into account, such that I might live here but wouldn't be able to afford to do anything other than look..

Trust me jobs pay well in HK – particularly for those educated abroad or with relevant overseas experience.  But many of this jobs are not advertised – particularly now days.  Recruitment firms can definitely be worth try for some one from overseas – but you need to be here on the ground.  You just contact them directly – you will need a CV.  Hunter has listed some of the top ones.  Give them a call – if you have a decent CV they will be willing to meet with you – now in particularly as the market is slow for most of them  – so they have time on there hands.  They can give you the scoop on the market and your prospects.

But now frankly is not the best time to be looking for a job in HK or probably most places.  Typically recruitment slows down a lot at this time of year any way – at least for good jobs likely to pay a year end bonus.  But on top of that the job market is getting pretty thin in HK due to all the uncertainty in the financial markets and in the US economy.  There are just fewer jobs out their, and employers can be a lot more selective with their choices of candidates now than say a year ago.   You maybe be better off waiting until the economy picks up.  But if you are really serious meet with some of the recruitment firms Hunter listed to get a better understanding of the current job market.  Browsing the Sunday news paper is not likely to tell you very much.

Renunerations always depends on the type of job, experience and what your interviewer thinks of you ...
in the past, talking to friends from the States and England they always tell me the pay in HK is much
better then what they can get at home ... this is based on mid - higher management jobs,
lower management jobs should be less so.  If you have 10 years experience, you should at lease be
in mid management !

Pay scales for the same type of job would be different in large corporations and small companies, there are
advantages and disavantages to both but I think nowdays in HK for a mid management job,
one would get more then 25K.

Nah I'm going home to finish my contract (3ish more months , then come here and seek properly I only really made a half assed attempt to look around this time , its just that the UK economy has turned to shit much faster than I had hoped and thus it seemed there was very little to go back for..... but I'm flying 5.5 years experience already and some of them seemed a tad crap...
