Page views are increasing at an increasing rate. Last month it was 2,733,981 in total. This month, after 4.5 days, it is 494,820. It should get up above 4,000,000, easily beating the previous month record set in 2012. So, wander, to answer your question about what the site owner was thinking, probably to increase traffic, like jet said. Whether you like it or not, the owner sees a need for this from a business point of view.
Like I said earlier, I will move any reports that put bros at risk - such as a detail that could trace back to SO or boss. Only the truly exceptional cases. There has always been a risk that a boss, colleague or friend is a lurking member of this forum (we have about 150,000 of them), so if highly sensitive details were added, RA should reflect this when reports are created, right?

Anyone reporting can still set the RA they want, as well as setting RA for attaching pics, right ?

Only suggestion i would make is to change the reports template :  from time of visit to week or month of visit

In the future it will. The problem is that all the past posts were made with the understanding that the member-wall (RA10 basically) prevented google searches of the posts. We set our comments expecting that level of protection. Now those posts are exposed without the expected RA10. I don't believe the owners intended to harm his members but they have certainly put us at risk and made many of us unhappy and very nervous.

So, if you prefer NO forum, you may just get your wish...if we don't start getting more traffic and people patronize the banner advertisers.

I think most of us agree we would like to see more traffic and more posts. Tuning up the category list was an improvement. Opening up the content to the public to drive traffic is understandable and it might help. There are many ways to boost membership and traffic. For example, Give Ks for signing up members. Asking members for ideas on how to increase traffic might reveal a host of good ideas so give Ks for good ideas to boost traffic. There are some very savvy tech and web people here.

Putting your most valued members at risk however will likely do nothing to increase traffic.  Aliening the core participants that create the content that attracts traffic appears to be counter-productive. It may drive senior members away who provide good content.

Suggestion: For the next 6 months allowing members to retroactively put RA10 on their critical past posts would solve the problem and I would guess 98% of the posts would remain open to the public. No burden on the moderators either. Problem solved, members happy, more content to boost traffic, owners happy.

In the past, getting to RA10 was as easy as just registering a user name with your email, there was never a vetting process involved, RA10 was used not as security protection, it was used to get people to sign up as members to create a sence of belonging in the forum. Thats why people who've made reports or comments that could bring problems to themselves or others were asked to put a higher RA on their posts by mods

The way i looked at it … opening up the forum will certainly increase page views - not 2 figure % increase but 3 figure % increase over time. Opening up the forum would also bring clowns and idiots posting here, maybe even hackers as this English forum is a lot more internation then the Chinese forum.

Opening up the forum will bring more people here from search engines so we should expect to see more posts with ads, links to other sites by people who makes money doing this kind of thing.

Opening up the forum will mean a lot more work for the mods if we want to preserve the way of life we've been used to

Great suggestion Dooper. I concur.

@Twice, the issue here is not a matter of ease of getting membership (RA10), but rather, being searched by Google.

The proposal by Dooper is a win-win for everyone. Except for possibly whomever has to allow the function to allow for users to retroactively set the RA Access.

Unless a bro got his user name found out, search engines will not be of much use for privacy
We've had many bros who had problems with their user name being found out and i believe the mods have helped them out enough for a happy ending

To put people here at ease, may i also suggest apart from making that 1 change to the template, that all reports prior to a certain date be made RA10, and reports after that date no RA0 or that all reports that are automatically closed be RA10 ?

I suggest a banner warning on top of every page for the time being informing everyone that all pages and reports are searchable on google now.

Perhaps a stickie too in the Forum Guidelines secton for those brothers who periodically login.

I myself was lucky to even stumble onto this thread as I usually do not spend as much time as I used to read every thread and report.

If you let the members retroactively put RA10 on their troublesome posts at least you can offload that part of the problem. There are probably a half million or more posts from the 150,000 members. RA10 on a few thousand or so will not affect the page view increase in any significant way.

I tried using a search engine to locate something specific on this forum and failed … maybe my internet abilities are limited

I think for those who thinks their reporting may compromise their real life, do what mod TD said and PM him your concerns
Otherwise maybe the mods can discuss with the admin regarding the possibility of making past threads RA10 when they are automatically closed … i dont think this will have much impact on page views and it may make people want to be members so they can read up the past

I am gob smacked that every existing report was not given an RA10.
Every report was written by Bros under the pretense that only members could read it.

Now the majority of reports are for public view... Kind of destroys the brotherhood...

Page views may increase but members trust will decline.

One suggestion of all closed threads having RA10 does not work apparently. The mods have been discussing a workable solution - one that solves this problem as well as meet the site owner's request to open up the forum.  Once admin comes back on and gives his opinion, we will let you know. Sit tight.

The Archive (RA10)

There's a new section called The Archive where we'll put all the old reports.  It is RA10.  Give us a few days as we migrate everything.

Details on the new Archives section are found in the feedback section. Yazoo worked tirelessly to get this thing up and running, moving tens of thousands of threads - 30 threads at a time. Thanks man.

I am not usually one to "shoot first and ask questions later..." but I sorta did this time.  I was wrong.

Nice work guys and thanks again!!
