Thinkinjg of emigrating

No not out to HK unfortunatly.

A mate of mine that lives in the South of France may have an option to take over a bar.

I've run bars many years ago.

Not enjoying my current job at the mo.

Am very tempted.

I might go out and run it for him.

Big decision tho

I'd unfortunately say no , as the economy of Europe is utterly tanking and people aren't going to pay €5 for a beer anymore in the South of France, I went motorbike touring a few years ago with beers at €5 it felt expensive since the South of France depends heavily upon British people visiting there , its going to die down , my last recon mission out the the South of France saw that it was quiet as hell..

Depends where it is actually as the cote'dazure is getting queit not very many british tourists out there is thats what you are going after.

"Not enjoying my current job at the mo."

How many people really enjoy their job?  I've been in the same employment for 22 years, same employer and all, and in that time I've enjoyed the job for maybe 8 of those years.

Where are you from?

Thats the issue though Ned in that is it worth spending 8-9 hours of your life (in Europe anyway) doing something you don't like?.

Its like those Japanese salarie men you get a rebellious type who salarie man for a few years get some capital together and go do something else completely different...

Life is far too short to do something you don't like?..

I utterly hate being an auditor / accountant type , there is a huge lack of job satisfaction and I get moaned at all the time, the pay is reasonable (low for HK standards) but I feel empty all of the time and thus I actively seek to do something else entirely.

Hunter and WackoJacko I appreciate the empathy guys.

There's me thinking I was posting in the chat section where it wasn't all about the mongering

Kennichi I'm not chasing the tourist € too much.

This bar does more local trade than tourist. And at the mo it's a dive.

My mate is a local having lived out there for 5+ years.

It's all about quality of life with a half decent profit. I gave up chasing the dream of mega bucks years ago.

I'm saving that dream for poker.

This bar can make more than it's making with little effort and it's already profitable.

I can't see a downside.

I'd rather be working for myself hard than working for someone I don't like /respect and just putting in the hours.

I've had my own business and I can tell you the downside is you are putting your balls on the line and you have the opportunity to lose everything you have.  You can never get away from your business as it is like a child.  Downside?  Plenty.  Upside?  Some.  I sold my successful business after 7 years and now sell my experience and make more money and don't have the problems associated with non paying debtors, staff, disgruntled customers.....and the list goes on.

if the bar is profitablle and pays you well,  and also provded free accomadation! hopefull free food too

i would go for it!

not like you have to stay there forever!

when running any sort of business for someone, make sure you do as much work and take as much responsilbily as possible!

most people will do the opposite and want a easy life, but by doing what i say, after a while you can blackmail him for a bigger salary

either let you walk out and let the business crash, or pay you well, to make you stay!

we want to be in control, not be controlled by our employer

It appears as if you are going through the same thoughs as me , in that I've stopped chasing the $ as much and just want to feel some satisfaction...

My thought for this would be to consider this......

When is the next time such an opportunity like this will come along? ,

If it will rarely or never come again then go for it, if you get offers like this all the time then you can try again later in life...

I'm having a once in a life time moment with something else , and have decided to take 11 months out of my life to persue this...

I'll return to the UK or HK more than likely completely penniless or there abouts but think that this experience of a life time will be worth it and thus unless I am incapacitated or die or go bankrupt before hand I will go and do this.

do you like running bars? if you do and you trust your assessment of the situation (and if you can't trust yourself then you need more than an internet chat room full of sick fucks like myself), then go for it.
unless, of course there's a wife and kid(s) and kids' school fees and mortgage etc etc
