#4 Post at 25-11-2010 17:37  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L I have been in HK for a while and have a very basic understanding of cantonese.  Learning Mandarin so I have a basic understanding of that.  So when it comes to girls that can speak both, I give it a mish mash during the conversation.  I can get by with English and my trusty translation program

I think knowing conversational Cantonese and/or English, you can still have a grand ol' time.  But, from my recent stop over in Macau and in anticipation of doing some punting in the PRC next year, I've vowed to pick up some Mandarin.  I don't think it's necessary to close the deal, but it'll just be more enjoyable to relate to the girls and get the GFE (if that's your cup of tea).

Cantonese is like the native tongue.  Same with Toi-san (dad) and hoi-ping (mom).   Mandarin was learned in the first year of high school, Japanese was learned during the next 3 years of high school.  I own and run a Internet Service Provider in Hawaii so picked that up from the business partners and customers.  So I think in reality, what you need is money and a common language so you can understand each other.  Would be weird to try to explain something with hand gestures since that will eat up clock time. Canto I find that many Mandarin speakers can understand a decent amount, esp. those who have lived in Southern China for any amount of time.
