When I routinely sync my iphones it periodically does a "backing up iphone" mode whether I want it to or not.  I wonder if it's backing up EVERYTHING or just the basic important stuff?  Because it would be terrible to get the 32GB iphone and load it up with videos and then have to wait for a backup of 32G everytime.  Does anyone know?

The backup backs up everything. As I previously had to do a hard reset and clear up everything. When i started a fresh sync. It asked is its the backup from the name i used or a new one. When i selected the name i used....... hey, it looked like i didn't do any resetting, except putting passwords back into the emails section

Is there any way to make the backups manual?  I don't want random backups SOMETIMES when I just want to sync.  If the answer is complicated then I can google instead.

In iTunes, when your phone is plugged in, right click your mouse on the iphone icon and a bunch of options appear. This will include an option to back up your phone.

Sorry my bad

You would need to amend the xml files to disable the random backup syncs - http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2008/08/13341/

Thanks a-p, too bad apple didn't make a more consumer-friendly method of disabling it.  Guess I'll have to edit the xml file for now.
