Why I love Bangkok...

Well, there are many reasons, really...

But I was walking around the Sukhumvit area tonight, and I realised one big difference between HK and BKK.  I'm in my mid-50s.  When I go out clubbing or bar-hopping in HK, I generally feel like a fossil.  Everyone I meet is 20s, 30s, and 40s.

In BKK, it seems different...  There are a large number of 50-ish and 60-ish guys here.  I don't feel so out of place.  And certainly the women here seem very accepting of older men...  many 20-somethings would actually prefer a man in his 40s or 50s to one in his 20s or 30s...

Of course, there's also the fact that I can speak a lot more Thai than Cantonese or Mandarin...  Being able to speak even a little of the local language helps immeasurably in creating good rapport...

Have fun, CGP

So you speak some Thai. That's one of the the two Asian languages I wish I'd taken the time to learn (- the other is Korean). My first trip to Thailand was back in the early 80's. What a difference 25 years makes! My last trip, I couldn't help but notice how much healthier, taller and more beautiful the girls have become. (Just like here in Taiwan, and the rest of Asia too, now that I think of it.)

Yes, my friends here who have been around for many years say that it has changed immeasurably...  in some ways for the better, in some ways for the worse.  But there's no stopping the relentless march of what poses as progress...

Thai has a great advantage over Chinese.  It's spoken just like it's written.  So the written language is a great aid to learning the spoken language...  Try that with Chinese characters...  ;-)

Speaking of Bangkok, I was told that there is a reason WGs there will do anything a client asks.  If they don't and the client complains, she will be a good beating from the mamasan or papasan afterwards.  That's they way to training their WGs.  And the girls can't do anything about it.  Either their are use to it, or they need the job, if you may call it that.  It's quite sad but the society is built on an open sex tourism industry.

Sawadee Karp Mr. CGP;

I have to contradict you on the Thai vs Chinese thing. IMHO, there is no better or worse languages. I am an ethnic Chinese. Have travelled to Thailand countless times, mostly to Bangkok. I love their language, food, places, shopping, hotels are dirt cheap and of course the numerous bath house (fish tanks) at Rachadapisek (Huai Kwang). I also love my motherland where my ancestor drifted from the coaster cities of China to my present birth country due to the outbreak of the opium war. My situation and status is partly thanks to the British. Otherwise, I might not even be borned.

I do not know whether you know this, but all Chinese aka Mandarin written words/characters are universally standardized by our great First Emperor of Qin. The different pronounciation you hear are actually different dialects. We chinese have no difficulty in understanding each other if all of us were to speak PuTongHua (铺通话) But due to the vastness of China, in many places, they have their own dialect, but still, written words is standard. For example; the Surname Chen (陈) in Cantonese is pronoun as Chan whereas in Fujian is Tan and in Teochew is Tang. Imagine, all different sound derive from a Chinese character.

I agree with you on the relentless march for 'So Called' Progress. But in Bangkok, I do not know if you have noticed there are many unfinished constructions projects. The half erected/completed building are now home to many many avian creatures, call it a bird santuary if you want. I wonder if these birds are the cause of bird flu in Hong Kong. The avian population in Bangkok has exploded, I guess some must have migrated to Hong Kong, what do you think?

Like in every developing Country, people are getting more educated and affluent. Even the WL/WG are getting better in lingo, dressing and choices. I was there for 3 days last week. I have know this Thai guy for more than 20 years. He will bring me around when I visit Bangkok. A good friend. Accordingly to him, it is the their Government who are the ones progressing (thier pockets getting fatter by the minutes) and not the common man in the streets you see. Some are worse off compared to 10 years back. Baht getting weaker and inflation caused villagers to sell their daughters. Well, this is life in Thailand.

You have fun too!

Sex1;

What you quoted has some truth in it. But I have to disagree a little. The WG getting beaten up are in the rural or less known Cities like in the South of Thailand. They are Hatyai, Songkla City, Betong & ETC very near the Malaysian border and in the Northern Thailand - all the Mae Township's brothel which is near the Burmese border. Back in the early ninties when there are direct flight from my homeland to Hatyai, many of us mongerers would take the short hop there (1 hour flight northwards)

The mongering system or method are so much different from Bangkok. Overhere, you go to the 'Chicken Farm" before noon and choose your poultry. Tell them which hotel you are staying and instruct them to be there at your stipulated. In this transaction, you get the girl for almost 24 Hours, depending what time you tell the MMS you want the WG's. When you are with them, you could screw her till yours or her eyes POP. A friend of my friend once had 9 bonks in 18 hours, he did not leave his hotel room and ordered food in. I wondered what was he thinking! One crazy SOB! In this town, if the mongerer made a complain to the Manager of the 'Chicken Farm', HeeHee, the WG's will be in for a beating and sometimes denied food for a day. On the other hand, most WG are extremely happy to be booked. The WG's gets to sleep in a Hotel with nice bed and air-conditioner, free food and a good shower compared to their rickety wooden floored accomodation infested with bed bugs and mosquitoes. I have witnessed all these places.

They will leave the next day at noon. The cost for such WG is about 1,000.00 to 1,500.00 BAHT then. Nowadays, according to a friend, the rates now is 2,000.00 to 2,500.00 BAHT. These places mentioned are mostly frequented by North Malaysian people. They simply drive 1 hour from Penang or 40 minutes from Alor Star (Kedah). My nationalities seldom visit these places because there are no more direct flight now.

i wouldnt say they prefer older guys to younger guys! more likely cos they know these old guys are more likely to be in their country looking for sex! knowing who their potential customers are, they make their move!

if a younger guy was to signal his interest to the wg, im sure the younger guy wil be more likely to be approached??

I was not trying to say that Thai is better or worse than Chinese.  But if you know the Thai alphabet (which is technically an abugida like Hebrew or Arabic, since the letter order is not strictly unidirectional), you can correctly pronounce a word that you have never seen before and whose meaning you do not know.  By contrast, pronouncing a Chinese word (in any dialect) requires that you already know the character.  When confronted with a character you have never seen before, there is not (to my knowledge) any way to know how to pronounce the character.

Having said that, pinyin is a phonetic equivalent.  And when I made my rather feeble attempts to learn Mandarin, the pinyin romanisation of the characters was invaluable.  But having mastered the pinyin, one must still learn the characters, one by one...

Agreed. In the eyes of the WG's, older and matured men are much more stable financially. Through the multiple types of media today, they more or less know the lifestyle of the Westerner that the 'Older/Matured' guy is likely a divorcee, retired or simply seperated from his other half. They know these guys are looking for Company, either short term or better, long term.

Anyway, younger or older doesn't matter. What matter is the WG are also alooking for a good time with a nice Gentleman who will pay them for the Company. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hello CGP;

I see what you mean. Don't you find Thai language sound very beautiful too. If you do not know, the Thai language has got 46 alphabet compare to English which has only 26. And Bangkok is the short form Name as all of us known the City/Capital of Thailand as. Here is the full version Name of Bangkok:

"Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit"

About Mandarin, yes I agree. If you don't start young it is very difficult to remember all the Chinese character. As a Chinese, I sometimes have trouble reading and remembering them too. Especially with the aid of computers, we tends to get lazy as most words/characters are programmed/softwared in the PC/Laptop. Anyway, people are intelligent, if you find the WG's you like, chances are, you will use body and sign language to communicate. So far, with the language barrier, I do see this as a hinder to having fun in Krung Thep.

Thai relatively speaking is useless to learn.  You can pretty much get by most places in urban Bangkok with English, similar to HK.  The same can't be said for China.  Besides, almost half the world's population speaks a Chinese language and as such knowing Chinese would be a helluva lot more useful.

Think of Chinese as more or less an 800-character alphabet.  Once you learn the basic 800, other words start becoming combinations of the characters, and you can start to see patterns in how to pronounce it, even if you have no idea what the word means.

WTF????

I'm going to assume that it has some kind of meaning?  Like it's more of a description of the city, rather than a name?
Or just a bunch of thai king/emperor names listed since the dawn of time?

I would have hated to have to spell that out in a geography test when I was a kid.... sheesh!

Hey Reggie;

I assume you have been to Thailand and obviously Bangkok. But for me, I travelled around Thailand, by road/rail and even rode on Elephants, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai/Rai, then into Laos, Cambodia and back in Thailand. It took me almost 4 months to complete. Besides getting to know their WG's. We as traveller wants to experience their Culture, Food, Customs and of course their Languages. The real full length version is not names of previous kings but description of how wonderful, devine and good Bangkok is. It is the TRUE name of Bangkok. Believe me. The children are being tested in Schools and during official ceremony, this full length version is being recited several times. I can show you the name in their language, but what is the point, I don't even know how to read Thai. Anyway, hers it is:

Bangkok's Full Name in Thai:
กรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุธยา มหาดิลกภพ นพรัตน์ราชธานีบุรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์มหาสถาน อมรพิมานอวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยะวิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์

So, many traveller who went to Bangkok are really tourist. They shop, eat/drink, be merry and of course Monger. How many can claim they truely travel to a Country and learn from them, their Culture and such. I think I have been to Bangkok about 30 times and if you add places of Greater Thailand, maybe 50 times, each time at least 3/4 days. Knowing a Thai friend helps, but I still haven't a clue what their culture and lifestyle is all about. If you are thinking of a visit to Thailand in the near future, don't stay in Bangkok, go to places like Khorat, Koh Chang, Hua Hin or even Chiang Mai/Rai. You will find all these places in contrast of the Capital.

Looking from a Thai perspective: Westerner like Soi Cowboy, NANA and Sukhumvit Areas. Places like Ekkamai, have you been there? Mostly locals frequent here with a handful of foreigners. For Asian, we prefer MBK, Siam Square, Prathunam, Huai Kwang and Yaowaraj (China Town). Bangkok has evolved with the influx of Tourist - some 20 million a year, she has adapted to the needs of foreigner. In conclusion, we as tourist (Farangs & Asian) love Bangkok because this City caters to what we like and want. It is actually not the other way round.

Why do I love Bangkok?  So many reasons, but some of the more distinctive ones are:

1.  On the BTS Skytrain, inside it doesn't smell as bad as the HK MTR of unwashed hair or bodies.  Seats are individually sectioned and well apart so that your upper arm is not touching the adjacent passenger's upper arm, like in HK MTR.
2.  When in BKK walking past a good looking female, and you smile at her, you are likely to get a smile back.  In the US, females avert their
eyes and look away before you even get near them, as if they don't want you to make any form of connection with them.  HK females are somewhere in between--those having been in the US will avert their eyes, while the real locals just look straight ahead.
3.   Thais are likely to go out of their way to help if they realize you are non-Thai, or not speaking any Thai, and will give more slack to a non-Thai than to a Thai when some infraction occurs.  In the US, if you don't speak English, or in some parts Spanish, look out.  A Japanese student was once shot by a policemen because the student didn't understand what he should do when told to "freeze".  He kept moving and the cop shot him.

Well, there are many more reasons, but I think the above are some not so obvious reasons.

roughly speaking,

- a freelancer that you'd pick up from the street, coffee shop or a pub - about $150 to $250HKD

- taking a girl from a gogo bar, about $150HKD for the barfine plus $250 to $500HKD for short time

- a higher-quality place like Posiedon, chooising a girl on the upper floors, $600 to $1200HKD for 90 minutee session, can be model-quality and lighter skin.

- Bangkok 141 escort agency - about $800 to $1500 HKD

so, not quite as cheap as one might think.
