Passport stamp

I just read Wachovia68's plan for 30 hours in Macau, it's been a long time since I've gone.

The primary reason keeping me away is the incriminating stamp in my passport, just to check does this still happen?

I'm HKID holder but have to wait another year for permanent, after which you don't get the stamp right?

i am not 100% sure,
but i see my colleague using his passport together with his HKID (non-permanent)
he did not get any stamp, just need to show passport, and cannot use the auto-lane.

This can't be true.

I can use the E-Channel at the ferries and the newly installed E-Channel at the airport.  I did not use my passport to enter on my last trip (I'm in Macau now).

I have had varying responses entering via the airport previously.  Sometimes they would allow me to use my non-permanent HKID, and sometimes they throw it back to me and request a passport.  I've never had to present both, as they just ignore it and process the passport it seems.

Via the ferries, I have never had a problem ever since it was first allowed via registration at the Macau terminal.

Not sure I understand all the subtleties and official names here so I'll ask a question. I have some kind of E-Channel abilities that let me enter HK with just a bar code and a fingerprint. Are you saying this will also let me into Macau with no passport stamp? Or it will do this only if I have E-Channel abilities plus I am a HK permanent resident? (Which I am not. Nor do I have any kind of Hong Kong government issued ID).

Thanks in advance!

It is my understanding you have to have permanent residency status to use the Macau echannel machines but I could be mistaken. The best way to test it is to try the machines right across the HK ferry terminal immigration and see if you can register with your ID. (Although if you don't have an ID card and only the bar code I'm not sure if the machines recognize that.

I'm a permanent resident but my friends on work visas with HK ID cards could not register for the Macau echannel so ymmv

E-Channel for frequent flyers

There is an E-Channel for people who earn certain status at various frequent flyer programs.  Don't know exactly which ones, but I was informed by my frequent airline EVAair that I qualify.  You do not have to be a permanent resident of HK/Macau or have any ID, just the frequent flyer card from your airline would do.

You can read up the specifics here:

interesting, i have an EVAair FF card... so has it ever helped you bypass immigration queues for ferries into MFM and into HKG?

For EVAair, you have to have @ least silver level and up, the basic Green wouldn't do it.

I flew into HK last week but in order to apply for the card I'd have to go through immigration and apply in the main lobby.  I was on a time crunch and would have missed my ferry to Macau so didn't go through with it.

But the government link I post above specifically says all you need is the frequent flyer member card and a passport showing eligible entry status (I assume anyone with a non-Chinese passport enters Macau visa-free) to qualify for the e-channel.

The link clearly states Macau ferry terminal as one of the landing spots with this E-channel for frequent flyers.

I think it's best to contact your specific airline and ask them if your FF status/level qualifies you for this service as the government link does not provide a list of airlines that qualifies for this service.

It is not for Frequent flyers but for Frequent visitors from China to HK. My friend had to register to use the E-channel because he was in Hk every week. You can scan your passport on the E-channel and go through. But he could not use it while going to and from Macau. HKID holders will have to show their passports while entering Macau( after staying for 7 years you can apply for Permanent HKID). If you are a Permanent HKID holder then you do not need to show your passport at Macau immigration. Permanent HKID also entitles you to register for the E-channel in Macau.

I'm not a permanent resident, but I do have a restricted HK ID.

I registered for the Macau program in the first month that it became available.  Since that time, i've never gone through manned immigration at the ferries.

The airport was more of a hit and miss affair.  Some officers recognized my HKID, others would ask their superiors with varying levels of success and failure.  Some times I was allowed to enter with the HKID, other times they would demand my passport.  What you should remember is that if you go into Macau with a passport, use the passport on the ferry to HK as well, otherwise the E-channel will trap you into the middle portion and you will be questioned by immigration.  Use the same ID in and out of Macau!

On my last trip I saw the new E-channel at the airport.  My HKID works.  Not sure what the qualifications are, but I'm glad it does!

from what i have gathered, it appears that HKG used to operate a Frequent Traveler Card program, and this card only works in and out of HKG, and all this card does it let you jump the lines at immigration (you still need to have your passport stamped by immigration). however, as of JUL 8, 2012, they have closed the card program to new applicants and merged everything with the e-channel operations, which works at all HK affiliated e-channel gates. this is the biometric immigration where you scan passport and scan fingerprint.

from the HK gov website:

Successfully enrolled visitors can use the Frequent Visitor e-Channels in the following control points.

    Hong Kong International Airport
    Lo Wu
    Lok Ma Chau Spur Line
    Shenzhen Bay
    Macau Ferry Terminal
    China Ferry Terminal

Right, the specific E-Channel is called "frequent visitor", not "frequent flyer".  But your elite frequent flyer status would qualify you to use this frequent visitor channel according to the official release.  Bare in mind, having frequent flyer status just qualifies you to apply, you get on the spot approval/rejection; obviously if you only visit Macau once a year, you wouldn't qualify as a frequent visitor regardless how much you fly.

All interesting stuff.

However...

If I apply for an E-Channel card wouldn't this be, somehow, incriminating the next time I go to Macua with my SO.

Passport guy: "Oh sir your name/passport/number says you have a frequent visitor status so please go through the automatic gate as usual"

SO: "Why the fuck do you have frequent visitors status for Macua?"

Me: "I have no idea.  Isn't that weird."

Passport guy: "No here is application form with your signature."

Me: "errr....."

So, this e-Channel access will only give you unstamped access into Hong Kong, but not Macau, correct ?

Damn. What I need is no Macau stamp on my passport, HK stamp won't be a problem for the wife.. any Bro with more ideas ? Note that i do not have a HKID, only a passport.

Exactly my issue, the stamp I get in my passport as I enter and leave Macau.

Really the Macau authorities should understand these kind of issues and have a work around, it's good for their business.

I do not live in Hong Kong, so I can't speak for how the E-channel operates for people with HKID.

I go to Macau during my visa runs from either China or Taiwan, or whenever I am uber-horny.  I will check out this frequent travelers e-channel next time I take the ferry into Macau.  Since Macau Ferry terminal was listed on that list, I am expecting some sort of card/barcode on passport in lieu of stamp on passport when entering Macau at the ferry terminal.

I did see the e-channel this time when I entered the Macau ferry terminal immigration but could not use it as I didn't apply for it at HKIA (you can't apply for it in Macau).  Will report as soon as I do this next time and let everyone know.
