I recently returned to Changping last Saturday night.  As I knew I would be arriving late, I contacted a great KTV gal I met the previous week and asked her to wait for me.  She met me at the train station, and we grabbed some dinner before joining my friends at the Lihao for another night of singing and fun.

I am ABC, and my Mandarin is poorer than poor.  My gal and I get along mostly by sign language, occasionally google translate, and fumbling our way around.  

But, this past weekend, after some heavy GFE-sex,  I got the very distinct plea from her for me to acknowledge her as my  Lao pao (老婆).  This much I understood.  This took me by surprise--I must say--and not knowing "contractually" what that meant I told her I'd think about it.  Our goodbye gave me the feeling her ship was sinking ...it was an Oscar-worthy performance.

So, bros, what exactly does Lao pao (老婆) entail?  

I've had various answer from some of my mongering buddies that range from--its like "going steady" in school--kinda like just a title (I'm cool with that )--to she's asking for a contract for exclusive relationship (I'm not so cool with that, especially the $$ support she's probably asking for ).  

Curious. Opinions?

Lao Po means wifey. Wifey in the most endearing sense.

It means different things to different people, but more or less likely she wants you exclusively... You have to clarify with her what she expects out of the relationship.

No it could mean anything, depending on the person who said it. Don't put too much significant into the word, watch out for other tell tale signs like her behavior, facial expression, body language etc and most importantly, what she demands of you after saying that word.

dude, she is a professional.  Imagine if you took it to heart if every girl like you? or have a thing for you? If i got one of those for every dollar, I would own Macau.

btw, every girl is your wife for 1 hr or time spent at KTV

But guys, these are KTV gals, they use those kind of intimate phrase all the time with all their customers.

Mostly, I watch them sing songs in Mandarin.  Obviously, I don't speak it nor read the sing-a-long captions.  Though, I do sing (if you call it that) "Hotel California" every once in a while when it pops up on the playlist.

Sidenote: I hate how damn loud my karaoke-loving bros. pump up the volume.  It's stupid loud, and this coming from a former rock musician.  I know loud when hear it.  Throw in the lack of a pitch-corrector, and it drives me batty, and often contributes to me and my gal pulling out early.   Oh well.  Life's imperfect.


It's not easy.  Mostly, I rely on my HK bros, or Mandarin speaking bros, to help navigate cabs, KTV clubs, Saunas, etc.  Once I'm in a spot, I tend to do everything on foot--so am limited to restaurants, shops, etc. in a given area.  No biggie, I don't need to canvas the entire city.  Also, I always find out where the KTV is we'll be playing at, and book a room there.  Simplifies everything.

If I get in a comms bind, I usually call one of my bros., explain what I need, and put the cabbie/waitress/shopkeeper on the phone with my bros. on the other end of the line.  Works for me.

Eatting consists of a few basic Mandarin dishes I know, and alot of signing "I'll have what they're having".  I don't venture into much exotic foodstuffs.

That said, I have more than a few Caucasion US bros who travel there alone, for a week or two at a time, and have no problem getting around...or...ahem..."socializing"--though they do stick to BBS & Saunas mostly.  I haven't ventured solo to CP myself.

As to the "girlfriend" or "wifey" thing, I have always taken it as meaning "pretend" girlfriend or "pretend" wifey.  If that's not the case (and I do admit my lack of expertise here), then I've basically promised to marry half of SEA!

There's no real downside, IMveryHO to saying yes to a GF or Wife proposal.  Like I say, I've always taken it to mean "pretend" and only when you're in the 'hood.  However there is a big downside to declining, since in her mind she's not asking for anything other than mutual consideration.  I've taken it to mean that I can't session with other girls in that facility (or the one across the street ), but that's kind of the expectation by your third or fourth visit anyway.

Anyway, like I say, my knowledge is limited on this, but I have yet to have a girl expect me to support her.  I have gotten a couple of "please send money" SMS messages, over the last few years but nothing more than that.
